AU Honors College Results

I didn’t see a topic for this, so I figured I’d start one. I wanted to get a sense of who else got in, and get to know everyone, because after all we could be seeing a lot of each other!

Decision: Accepted to Honors College!

-Attended Governor’s Latin Academy (summer residential program run by state, only 45 students selected statewide)
Recommendations:
-Hopefully, and very likely, “glowing”. One is the math teacher I had for both my freshman year and my first year of Calculus, who has a reputation for writing great recommendations and who I’ve done service projects with. The other is my Academic Team coach, who I’ve known for all four years and took my freshman history class and AP Euro with.
Essays:
-Well, there were certainly a lot of them! I believe my academic journey one was semi-poetic, and my “why American” talked mainly about the availability of opportunities and engagement. As for the five honors college ones, well, my issue was on gun control, and the others I can’t quite recall at the moment.

Overall, I’m ecstatic! I still have other colleges to consider, and it’ll be a hard call, but I’m glad to have this as an option.

How did you hear?

I was accepted online yesterday and can view my award letter online (via the student account I was able to create a few days ago) but still haven’t gotten the “fat envelope”! (I’m in CT). Yet today I was received an invitation via snail mail to an admitted students reception in CT. Also wondering how people are hearing about acceptance into Honors. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I’m not sure how helpful this will be, but I got the huge packet, and the first letter stated my acceptance to both American in general and to the Honors college. Presumably anyone else will hear through the mailed acceptance packet.

I was accepted to Kogod as an undecided business major.
I was also invited to the Honors Program, along with receiving the Presidential Scholarship!

GPA: 4.3 weighted
Rank: 7/270
ACT: 34
SAT IIs: US History- 700, Lit- 730
Senior Classes: AP Calc, AP Gov, AP Lit, AP Econ (macro and micro), Honors Choir, and anatomy/physiology
Overall, I’ll have taken 8 AP classes and 9 tests by the end of this year

Extracurriculars/Other Activities:
-4 years varsity swimming, school record in 2012
-3 years varsity tennis, conference champs 2012 and 2013
-4 years International Club (Treasurer, then President junior/senior year)
-3 years as a freshman mentor
-3 years working as a lifeguard/swim instructor in the summer
-3 years in Key Club
-2 years Quizbowl/Academic trivia, varsity as a senior
-2 years in National Honor Society
-2 years in Chamber/Honors choir
-2 years tutoring in writing and freshman/sophomore level science
-1 year elected as a Senior Senate representative

Awards:
-Rotary Youth Leadership Award
-Outstanding school mascot Award- 12 seniors are chosen/voted on by our peers, teachers, and administration
-Americanism & Government test winner
-3 year Academic Letter
-Various sports awards/honors
-AP Scholar with Honor

Recommendations:
Probably very good; one was from my AP chem teacher (for more of an academic evaluation) and the other was from an English teacher who is the adviser of a a club I’m heavily involved in (for a more personal evaluation).

Essays:
I thought my essays were pretty good! I talked about how I was interested in studying many different topics and about political activism. In terms of the honors supplement, I felt my essay about an AU professor was especially strong, and I chose to write a tongue-in-cheek response to the 'What will you never understand?" prompt. AU’s essays were definitely more interesting than those of some of the other schools I applied to.

Overall, I’m EXTREMELY excited. I know they’re changing the Honors Program this year to be way more selective, so I’m honored I was chosen. This acceptance and the scholarship confirmed American’s place on my short list…it’s going to be a difficult decision!

I got my acceptance letter in the mail today and received the Dean’s award (15k a year) woo! Yet, I didn’t apply to the honors college and in the letter American University accepted me into the honors college…has this happened to anyone?

Congratulations all. Could you see your honors program acceptance along with the honors scholarship info online in the portal?

Hellocolleges, are you saying you got in without writing the 5 extra essays that were required this year?

Accepted

Yes I didn’t write any of the 5 extra essays and in the second paragraph they accepted me into the honors program…

@Hellocolleges. Well OK then. That’s a wrinkle that I wasn’t expecting. Happy for you but surprised that was an option as it appeared that the days of automatic consideration were over this year.

@dangerdmoney and @alix126 seem to have written the essays from their report. Honors program comes with a $20K scholarship. So are these other awards you are all mentioning in addition to that? Wow if so. Good for you all!. That’s pretty awesome.

So, Honors gets an additional $20,000 on top of the Presidential? I had thought $20,000 was the maximum merit award one could receive except for Frederick D.

We attended a preview day and were told that they wanted a cohort for Honors made up from across all the different schools - maybe they didn’t get enough applicants from certain areas? Just a wild guess. ha ha.

The invite for Honors without applying is surprising/unexpected. Agree with @halflokum.

@Hoggirl. To be clear and avoid rumor, I am asking the question about whether or not those awards are combined. I’m not saying that they are. I just do know that the honors program brochure mentions $20K. Hellocolleges is referencing a different amount and the others who have contributed didn’t say how much. Trying to understand how it works that’s all.

@halflokum - agree! That’s all I am trying to do as well - understand if it’s combined or not. Sorry if I was unclear. I see what you mean now since hellocolleges lists the $15,000 merit scholarship.

I am also very interested about being accepted into Honors without applying.

I was accepted to the honors program under the Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholar program ! I am very excited to meet other people who are in honors as well
