I got into both American University and Boston University. I am currently trying to decide between the two. I'm planning on majoring in Communication and having a minor in Business. But at BU I only got admitted to the College of General Studies (I can transfer to the college of comm in 2 years). Anyway, what is your opinion on these two schools and which one would you choose? I'm just looking for more information to help me in making my decision! Thanks!

EDIT: more info about me/college... money is no object in my decision since I will be paying about the same amount for both schools. I want an atmosphere where I can thrive and get the most out of my college experience. I would like to be surrounded by a motivated, passionate, student body who cares about their studies but still likes to have fun.

BU is more urbanely integrated than American, and American is very politically focused. I’ve heard that many non-politics/IR majors at American feel kinda out of place, though I do not know much about the communication major. BU is a tad more prestigious overall. I would go BU if I were you, but you need to consider those differences.

I have read that the college of general studies is harder to get into certain majors, I dont know about communications in articular, but I know that the BU SMG is very competitive and will be difficult to transfer into. If you already got into you’r major at AU, or you know its easier to get into I think that would be a better college investment. My dad went to BU and he informed me the the college of general studies is seperated from the actual school so you should probably look into that. However BU is a great school and is more integrated in the city than AU. I hope you choose a school that fits you best!

Well, I can tell you that my D is a non-poli sci/IR major at AU and has never felt out of place. There seems to be an impression out there that AU students are constantly discussing politics and agitating for social change–that’s not the case. They are very much just typical college students. And AU’s School of Communications has a substantial enrollment, so it’s not as if there’s a lack of students with that interest… Have you visited both? I think they have very different vibes, and visits should help with your decision. BU is much larger and lacks a traditional campus, though many would day the city of Boston is its campus. I don’t know if there are any downsides to starting in the School of General Studies, but it’s worth inquiring about–perhaps a post on the BU forum would be helpful. Best of luck in your decision
