Hi All, I’m looking for any assistance in helping us understand my son’s chances of getting into any of these four fine schools. His desire is to study international relations, so these are his top 4. He’s currently in his junior year of high school, graduating in 2019. I understand we’re early in the process.
PSAT:
Verbal: perfect 760
Math: 600
Will take SAT in the spring and ACT/2nd SAT next summer
GPA: 4.0 unweighted, 4.3 weighted
Current Core Classes:
- pre-AP Spanish 4
- pre-AP Environmental Science
- AP Functions Trig
- AP Language arts (aka “English”)
- US and World History (non-AP)
- Air Force Junior ROTC
Additional activities:
- Eagle Scout w/ numerous leadership positions held in Scouts
- Flight commander in Air Force Junior ROTC detachment
- Color guard and Saber team in AFJROTC
- Selected for AFJROTC leadership course
- Boy Scouts National Youth Leadership Training Course completed
- Secretary for International Club
- Model UN
- We expect him to have a part-time job fairly soon as well
- NJHS member (no leadership position)
- Freelance journalist for several web sites covering international politics (mostly focused on the Spanish independence movement)
Feedback is appreciated.
I think your son has a pretty strong chance. Congrats to him for Eagle! I’m an Eagle Scout myself and I believe that my service projects and leadership through Scouts was one of the major factors that got me accepted to Georgetown. The admissions committee sent along a letter with my acceptance package that said how they found my services in Scouting impressive, and that they hoped I continued doing service work here at Georgetown.
As far as the rest of the app goes, your son has a strong trajectory for GPA, although he will likely need to take more APs next year. Having a part-time job isn’t essential–what’s more important is that he is participating in activities that he is passionate in and can talk about in an interview or essay. SAT/ACT scores will be a big factor but from his PSAT scores, he should be fine as long as he studies and gets his math up. Getting leadership and being active in activities that interest him, especially within IR, is also very helpful.
Personally, I can’t speak to the other schools, but since Georgetown is the most competitive one of the 4, I would say he has a good chance. Feel free to ask me any other questions. I’ll be happy to answer anything. Good luck to him!
