Hey everyone, I'm looking for some advice here. I really really really want to go to Auburn, but I wonder if it would be "better" to go to UAB? I have received a $15,000/year scholarship from both schools, which covers all tuition at UAB, but is only 2/3 at Auburn. My major is pre-med, so if I were to go to Auburn I would have to go somewhere else for medical school anyways. I'm concerned about my chances of getting into a medical school if I don't go to a school that has a med school? I was named as a semifinalist for Auburn's Elite scholarship, so if (BIGGG IF) I get one of those then that would be an additional $10,000-$30,000 over 4 years. How do you guys feel about chances of getting accepted to med school if I went to Auburn? My dad is an AU alum and I have always wanted to go there. We live in Florida though, and out of state tuition is insane. I want to graduate from undergrad with absolutely as little debt as possible (hopefully none), so I am applying for tons of scholarships. I also applied for UAB's EMSAP program which guarantees 10 students a spot in their med school, but I feel that my chances of getting in to that are slim. I really only want to go to UAB if I get in to EMSAP because to me I feel like I would have a better "college experience" at Auburn. Anybody's comments/thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I'm just so confused right now on everything.

I’ve read here that med school admission depends most on grades and MCAT scores. Go where you think you’ll do best and can absolutely afford it. You’ll be paying through the nose for med school.

ponygirl i sent you a pm.

No one needs to go to an undergrad that has a med school. That is not necessary nor an advantage.

Even if you went to UAB, you’d be OOS for med school, and paying OOS fees for the SOM would be crazy when you have good options in Florida.

Is this what you currently have from Auburn?

*Presidential Scholarship

Requires a 34-36 ACT or 1490-1600 SAT score and a minimum 3.5 high school GPA for consideration.
Awarded at $60,000 over four years ($15,000 per year), a $1,000 technology allowance the first fall semester, and an invitation to participate in the University Honors College.
*

And, you’re being considered for this???

Several hundred applications are received each year, from which approximately 14 students are named finalists. Elite Scholars receive an additional $10,000 to $30,000 over four years ($2,500 to $7,500 per year).

You should have a good chance at that one. When are the winners named?

parent56: PM’ed you back!

M2CK: Yes, that is what I currently have from Auburn. They are mailing the letters with the results of the Elite Scholarships on January 19, so I should find out within a few days of that. Pretty much the only thing holding me back from Auburn right now is the fact that as of right now all my tuition would be covered at UAB and only 2/3 would be covered at Auburn. Is it dumb of me to choose Auburn over UAB just because I WANT to go there even though it might be cheaper to go to UAB?

I also have 50% of my dad’s GI Bill that I can use for college. Not exactly sure how much that will amount to be. I think it is a pretty decent amount though as it has a section for tuition, housing, and books.

Ponygirl, as a current freshman at UAB who had almost the same situation last year (engineering major, not pre-med), I will answer any questions about student life, my choice of UAB, and anything else you may need/want to know. Just PM me.

Find out how much your dad’s GI bill is.

For Auburn the GI Bill would be approximately:
Tuition: $4000/ year
Housing: $500/ month
Books: $500/ year

For UAB-
Tuition: $2900/year
Housing: $530/month
Books: $500/year

Just found out a little while ago that I am one of 29 students selected as a semifinalist for UAB’s EMSAP program, so I have to go interview in a few weeks. I really didn’t think I had a chance of this, so I had pretty much put it out of the picture. This just made the decision even harder. Obviously I still have to make it from one of 29 to one of 10, but I definitely didn’t think this would be a factor in my decision making process…

congratulations ponygirl!!! that is really fantastic…extremely selective program. as i mentioned in my pm if you have specific questions about uab i can put you in touch with my S2. Good luck!

Medical school admission is fundamentally merit-based; that a university operates a medical school as well as an undergraduate college typically has little bearing on whether or not applicants from the undergraduate campus will get admitted to the university’s medical school. Yes, some universities offer an advantage in medical school admissions to a specific set of its own undergraduates; typically students whom are in involved in joint BA-MD programs. What does weigh heavily in medical school admissions is your domicile. Many publicly supported medical schools are required to set aside the majority of their seats in the incoming class for state residents. Thus, there will be plenty of Auburn AND UAlabama-Birmingham alumni at the UAB School of Medicine.

Assuming you don’t get the big scholarship, what will your total cost of attendance be at each option? How much of that will you have to borrow?

I don’t think practical matters should be your only concern. Auburn legacies who grew up dying to go to Auburn are likely to experience a special magic in their time at Auburn that they won’t get at UAB. That’s not worth crushing debt, but it is worth something.

I was trying to decide how to say that and found that Hanna said it perfectly for me.

I applied for the auburn elite scholarship as well. I was wondering, did you get any sort of confirmation email when you sent your app? I’m a little worried because I didn’t. And good luck to you in whatever you decide!

Hanna: I’m not exactly certain what my total cost of attendance would be at each school… Tuition at UAB is about 16K/year and I have a 15K/year scholarship, and Auburn is about 21K/year and I have a 15K/year scholarship, but I will also be getting some departmental scholarships and POSSIBLY the Elite. But thank you for your input on being a legacy!!

annap24: I did not get any confirmation email from them either, but when I sent it I set it up on my end so that I would get a notification when they read it. So I know they got mine. Good luck to you too! Just curious, are you in state or out of state for AU?

Did you receive an e-mail yesterday about UAB EMSAP interview or a phone call?

gami and ponygirl…if for any reason you dont get emsap but decide on uab be sure to apply for sci/tech honors (you apply for that on the honors app, requires interview )…that is the honors program that will get you into research very quickly. very cohesive group…Dr Tucker, the director, is wonderful. Sci tech does pay for 2 years at phd level (however most science types will probably get a funded phd so may not be a biggie)

you might also want to apply for chemistry or biology scholars (if you have decided on your major)… these programs will also give research experience and TA (in labs) experience… you are also paid a stipend each year if in these programs, approx 3200 per year

Gami12: I received an email on Thursday afternoon that I was selected as one of the 29 and that another email would be coming soon with more details about the interview.

Parent56: Yes, I am interviewing for their honors program at the same time while I am up there :)

that’s great news ponygirl… interview isnt too intense but is important. think you will like the interviewers!
