Ok so I just had my Tisch audition. I signed up for a musical theatre audition but made it clear to them in the interview that I’d be just as happy in an acting studio.

I sang my two songs, which were pretty blah to be honest, I don’t think I impressed the auditioner in the room with me.

My two monologues were the best I have done them; I’m pretty sure I did my best and the guy laughed at all the right parts and seemed to enjoy them.

The interview went pretty well too, I think. I expressed I would be happy in any of the studios, specifically Playwrights’ Horizon and Atlantic.

Overall, I would say I had a decent audition, with the weakest part definitely being the singing.

Does the weak singing hurt my chances of getting into a regular acting studio, or am I hurt by the fact I signed up for a M.T. audition?

Academically I think I fit NYU standards. I got into Georgetown E.A., and have a 1510/1600 on my SATs, 4.0, APs, blah, blah.

If it matters, I’m a guy - there were only 3 other guys there with me at my audition slot, so if that is the overall trend at the auditions hopefully that will help my chances. Though if I still don’t in, I must REALLY suck haha.

I am not sure that any of us can really know the answer to your question, but for what it is worth, the fact that you felt that your songs did not go as well as you had hoped, should not necessarily matter if the auditioner feels you would be a good fit for Tisch based on the overall quality of your audition and how you handled yourself during the "Q & A".

One thing to remember though is that may be there were only 3 other guys the day of your audition, but Tisch has a lot of audition dates. The day my D auditioned for example there were at least a dozen in the AM alone. If for some reason you don't get in, don't take it personal, as the odds of getting into a BFA program are really somewhat of a lottery.

My son had similar experience to yours last year. Did not feel he did a good job on his songs, but nailed the monologue, discussed the different studios confidently with the interviewer and thought he got along well with the interviewer.

Accepted at Tisch and assigned to Adler. Happy as a clam there.

srm17~my S had a similar experience...didn't feel great about his songs, felt that the monologues went well, but got kinda a weird (negative) vibe from the interviewer. It all ended up working out. He said he was interested in CAP21 only and was accepted ED. Don't fret over how things felt...sometimes you just can't tell based on how you think the interviewer is perceiving you. Hope things work out for you as well.

Just to balance things out a little bit, my D had quite the opposite experience. Her auditioner was really positive, laughed during her comedic monologue and was generally so enthusiastic that D was a nervous wreck until her letter came in (in case she had misread it all); throughout all auditions she went through, we opted for a rather conservative & cautious approach of "don't read into anything, because what if"...
