Audition Clothing?

Hi everyone,
What should one wear when auditioning via DVD?
I'm going to be recording it in school with my chorus teacher accompanying me, so something formal is a little hard to do...

Something neat and conservative (or neutral). “Formal wear” is not required or expected.

This thread also has a lot of other links in it.

One point D discovered when preparing DVDs this year - if you’re doing two or more recording sessions, make sure to remember to wear the same outfit so that there’s consistency between tracks.

Stradmom, that’s a good point. We have tried to use the same, or at least very similar outfits for taped auditions, but a couple of things we were not able to control were: the attire of the accompanist and the length of his/her hair (the accompanist’s, I mean.) Also, the quality of light in the room, even if it is the same room. We recorded some Bach on a cloudy day and came back a week later to record a concerto movement, and the light was very different because sun was shining through the windows. But because the DVD segments were on different tracks, it seemed not to make a difference. :)

For vocal, we shot from the waist up. D wore a black shirt with lace sleeves. It’s actually a shirt that she wears to school but it could have been a semi-formal dress for all the viewers knew. I would be sure that whatever she wears and however it’s shot meets will meet the needs of a variety of uses. It turned out that our college app DVD was used for three competitions also. We made sure that the accompanist was not pictured in the DVD because we shot two different days with two different accompanists. I mentally marked the spot on the floor so the video would not deviate too much. If you don’t preview the video before you leave the recording session, you may find yourself coming back to make some improvements.

Wear what you would wear if you were auditioning in person. Consider the room you’re recording in, and try not to clash!
