Audition for MT or dance?

Thanks @Jkellynh17 I will look at that program and thanks too @mom4bwayboy.
@lcoulter32724 she had an assessment done and they said not strong enough for top tier MT schools and-iffy for others.she has a very pretty voice not strong. She will work with a new MT vocal coach and we shall see. They said with her strong dance and acting she could get in anyway, I think her voice is good enough just not for top tir but we werent looking at those anyway bc we are mostly applying to BA’s.

@joyfulmama - if her voice is not “strong”, one of the key things in helping her have a successful audition is to pick the right audition material - something that will really emphasize and show off the best parts of her voice. Her acting skills can also help her present the material well. I would really study up on what makes for a good audition song. Find someone who can help tailor her song selections to truly suit her personality and voice. And work with the vocal coach to present them well. We worked with a coach, Mary Anna Dennard, who also had a fantastic voice coach on her team. He really got to know our D and her voice before giving her a wonderful selection of songs. Her song choices were frequently remarked on, positively, during her auditions. And I know in past conversations on CC, there are many other people around the country that are also skilled in helping students with their song selection. This may be a strength of your new MT vocal coach. Just make sure your D loves her songs (you must because you are going to be singing them over and over and over your entire college audition season!) and that whatever she chooses really makes her shine in the audition room!

Thanks @vvnstar such great advice, compassion and encouragement!! We are going to meet with MTCA bc we live near NYC and can do in-person coaching. The song choice and acting the song are supposed to be main points of working with them. I have done extensive research on school fits for her and I feel we have realistic ones on her list. She is a hard worker and takes critiques well and uses them to improve so I know she will work hard for this!
Since her dance and acting are strong and with vocal coaching she should be fine!

@Joyfulmama, sounds like we are in the same boat. What schools are on your childs list? So far, my daughter has: Carnegie Mellon, Montclair, Boston Conservatory, AMDA, Pace University, Manhattan Marymount, CAP21/Molloy, UArts. She would prefer to stay in NYC area. She will be adding more, of course. Some she will audition for MT and others she will audition for dance (and like my original post, if a school allows you to audition for both, she will try to do that)

There are 3 BFA tracks at Roosevelt/CCPA: Acting, MT Voice and MT Dance. All tracks audition for and can be cast in all shows. All 3 take acting/dance/voice classes (both MT voice and dance have private voice as part of their curriculum, not sure about the acting majors). Chicago is a great theatre town and there are opportunities to work with directors/choreographers etc. from the community as guest directors and through outside work.

Look at Pace BFA in Commercial Dance – a lot of kids in that program book work in MT in NYC and elsewhere. Wonderfully talented performers; the students in CD mix with the MT kids a lot. They do an intensive in LA. Really cool program.

^Can vouch for what @MTTwinsinCA said! My friend just graduated from that program and actively auditions and has booked musical theatre gigs. Plus being in NYC allows the opportunity for added acting/singing classes and workshops if needed!

@Roro101 did both, I believe

@Jkellynh17 -CCPA’s BFA-Dance Major is certainly no easier to get into than it’s Voice track. The size of the program is expanding- they are adding faculty and facilities- and Jane Lanier, who heads the program is amazing!

I agree that Jane is fantastic and meant no disrespect to the program. I just think it’s been gradually getting up to speed, and after all, this is just the third year it’s been offered. You may be right that it is equally difficult to get into now, but I know that the first year, there were only two guys in the whole dance MT class…so you’d imagine that it would be a little bit easier at least for males. But I could be wrong, and freely admit that none of these programs are what a normal person would consider easy to get into. Do you have a kid there, @Mezzo’sMama?

@DVCmember, if your child wants to stay in the NYC area, you may want to add NYU, Wagner, Manhattanville (new program), Rider, and Hartt, which is not too far. All great schools.

@dvcmember – I do not know much about the program, but it looks interesting, and is worth looking at if your D wants to stay in the NY area… http://www.liu.edu/CWPost/Academics/Schools/SVPA/Dept/TFDAM/Undergraduate-Programs/BFA-TA-MT … and, a little farther out, but a strong program from what I understand… http://www.muhlenberg.edu/main/academics/theatre-dance/

@DVCmember We are looking mainly at BA’s so that she can either double major or minor. or just have access to liberal arts. Of course her preference would be all MT all the time lol!! She spends as much of her day as she can at the local theater, it is her happy place. We want BA with strong academics, very reputable MT program and voice & dance in the curriculum. Also she wants a traditional campus, that is why although we live right near NYC she si not looking at Marymount, Pace, NYU, Fordham etc… So our list is very short, so far we have: JMU, Muhlenberg, American, Northwestern( way reach) , Northeastern( tho it seems they dont have dance but the COOP’s seem like a good opportunity). Just starting to look at info for University of Tampa & University of Alabama,. For BFA’s she wants to add Montclair State(bc of its proximity to the city and closer to home) Elon. This is by no means a definite apply list except for the first three mentioned. I hope this helps.Oh possibly Wagnerbut from students who attend say it is not as academically challenging as it seems on paper. They thought academic classes were on easy side.

Others to check out might be Kenyon and or Denison in Ohio. Both excellent LACs with strong theater depts. and both have some very well known alums (Paul Newman and Allison Janney - Kenyon, Jennifer Garner and Steve Carrell - Dension)

@Joyfulmama - I would recommend taking a look at Christopher Newport, a BA MT program at a school with rising academics and a very nice campus. The curriculum has a true liberal arts focus while providing the essential elements of acting, voice, and dance for Musical Theatre.

Can anyone recommend more conservatory type programs for my daughter? Preferably she would like to stay in or around NYC, but she said she is also open to east coast and southeastern states. We are starting our list and plan to make it big at first, then narrow it down from there.

As I understand it Pace and Marymount Manhattan (in terms of schools in NYC) have a more conservatory approach (compared to say NYU or Malloy Cap21 where you spend 3 days on MT and 2 on academics). If she likes Boston BOCO is a pure conservatory- all MT all the time.

Shenandoah is in Virginia, about 75 miles from DC. Terrific conservatory style program w/strong Dance.

@DVCmember - here some possibilities:

Conservatories
Boston Conservatory MA
University of the Arts PA

Conservatories at Universities
Belmont School of Music TN
Shenandoah Conservatory VA*
Point Park Conservatory PA
U Hartford-The Hartt School CT

Conservatory-style Programs
Carnegie-Mellon PA
Coastal Carolina SC*
East Carolina NC*
Elon NC*
Emerson College MA
Florida State FL*
Ithaca College NY*
Long Island Post NY
Molloy/CAP21 NY
Montclair State NJ
New York U: Tisch NY
Pace NY*
Pennsylvania State PA*
Rider NJ
SUNY Buffalo NY
Syracuse NY
U Central Florida FL*
U Miami BFA FL
Western Carolina NC

An * denotes a prescreen is required.

*Note that most auditioned BFA programs claim to be “Conservatory-style.” Check curricula carefully to ensure it meets what you are looking for - for example, hours in the major can vary from as low as 60 to more than 90, dance requirements can vary from 12 hours to more than 20, Gen Ed requirements can vary from 30 to 40+, etc. The label “Conservatory” is used very loosely.

All programs, even Boco and U Arts, require at least 24-30 hours of General Education courses in order to meet state-mandated requirements and regional accreditation requirements.*

@DVCmember: Here are the Gen Ed requirements for “Conservatory-style” programs from my list above (as far as I could determine from quick scans through their online catalogs - it was not easy for some programs to determine what the Gen Ed requirements were, exactly). I also added two additional schools to the list: Catholic and NYU Steinhardt.

Carnegie-Mellon 20 (estimated @ 3 CMU credits per conventional semester hour)
Catholic U 30
Coastal Carolina 34-41
East Carolina 42
Elon 56-60
Emerson College 56
Florida State 36
Ithaca College 17-21 (apparently many Gen Ed requirements met by Theatre coursework)
Long Island Post 41
Molloy/CAP21 44
Montclair State 22
NYU Tisch 32
NYU Steinhardt 44
Pace 44
Penn State 41-45
Rider 33
SUNY Buffalo 31
Syracuse 30
U Central Florida 36
U Miami 21-30
Western Carolina 42

Note that for some programs, some General Education Requirements listed above may be met by Theatre coursework.

If you place an arbitrary cut-off at 33 hours of Gen Eds, then the most “Conservatory-like” of this group would be: Carnegie-Mellon, Catholic, Ithaca, Montclair, NYU Tisch, Rider, SUNY Buffalo, Syracuse, and Miami.
