My D is auditioning at a few schools that offer the option of doing a MT audition with the option to be considered for a spot in the BFA/BA Acting program. I am questioning whether it is an advantage or a disadvantage to do the MT audition . My gut instinct (which her vocal coach and monologue coach both agree with) is that why not show them all you've got and have more time for them to get to "know you". She is a strong singer and can move and hold her own in a musical- but she isn't a dancer. She is auditioning as an Acting Major in all other schools where you do not have this option. Do you think she would be considered less for an Acting acceptance than someone who did the legit acting audition? She certainly wouldn't feel like being accepted as an Acting major would be a consolation prize and worries that perhaps it is viewed as a second choice. She would be equally thrilled with either- perhaps leaning a teeny bit toward an Acting BFA. Would appreciate any help and guidance here. Thank you.

It probably depends on the school. My son auditioned for Acting at all the schools he applied to, with the exception of Ithaca, where he auditioned for MT, because the acting part of the audition was the same, he’s a strong singer, and they didn’t have a dance element. (He had never taken a dance class in his life.)

We figured, why not show that he can sing as well as act? What could it hurt, and it might help.

Lo and behold, he was admitted to MT and Acting both, was given a choice, and is now a MT freshman at Ithaca. But the dance classes have been a challenge.
