Hi, September. Your mention of being Canadian caught my eye. I wonder if you could possibly be the girl that my D has given some advice to this year re: Tisch. She told me she'd done that a few months ago or so. That would be funny if you were the same one. My D3 has applied to all Canadian schools this year so you two are kind of switching places. :) D2 is the one at Tisch. Best of luck to you at your auditions!

Alwaysamom - is your daughter involved in any musicals for Tisch coming up soon? We'd love to come see a production there. We saw A Chorus Line (although it was Steinhart). I heard Parade was going to be put on there; any others? Let me know any info! Thx.

alwaysamom--

is your daughter named Emily? If so, she did give me a bunch of fantastic advice!

*--R

rossji, my D is in Atlantic not CAP21 so she's not involved in any musicals this year. She attended an arts h/s and did musicals every year but decided to concentrate on straight acting in college. She loves Atlantic and has no regrets. :) I wasn't aware they were doing Parade. It's a fantastic show and we saw it when it was on Broadway years ago with Brent Carver. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, Tisch did Parade a few years ago. Strange that they'd do it again so soon.

September, yes, that's my D. What a coincidence! I'm glad she was helpful to you.

Catsmom-

Aww I met your daughter at the Point Park Audition. She is such a sweetheart.... and she seems incredibly prepared and, although I did not see her audition, incredibly talented. Tell her I said 'hi'. I was the blonde girl in her audition group (altho not in her dance group)... I was sitting next to the boy in all black with the orange shirt... haha she may not remember me, but we talked for a little while. Anyway good luck to her and to you!

Tiffany

Is anyone going to be at the Otterbein Audition tomorrow? I am! And then we drive to Chicago for CCM and BoCo..... nervous nervous!

I have been reading this for a while now and just decided to register and get a screen name thing. Thanks to everyone's information throughout the last couple years. It definetly has helped me be better prepared for auditions.. and realize that there's a lot of people in the same boat as me.

Thank you!

Cap 3rd years are putting on Grand Hotel this month (week of the 21st)
and "Smile" a GAP show goes up the same week.

september -
good luck to you! If you have any other questons regarding Tisch, I would be happy to try to help you out.

studio7-
Do you know if tickets are available to the public? If so, how can I get some!? And what's "GAP" Thankss- Dani

Dani -
Grand Hotel runs from 2/22 through 2/26. Directed by Tony Stevens and will be performed at the Connelly Theater - 220 East 4th St. (I'm not sure if you can call there directly or not). For info regarding this production they suggest you call Michon at Cap 212-807-0202. I doubt you will reach her directly but the office should be able to help you regarding tickets. If you are interested I wouldn't wait, because tickets go fast.

The other Musical "Smile" will be staged at the Tisch building in one of the small black boxes. GAP shows are student run. Generally there are only 2 musicals a semester and you must pass through a board to be accepted.
So all the creative team, planning etc has to be done before you go to the board in hopes of approval. Because so few get selected, the quality is often high. Last year my d directed and choreographed Seussical - which turned out to be the highlight of her year - very successfull, including establishing a relationship with Lynn Ahrens. (I read that you were just in Seussical - what a great show if its creatively done! -hope you enjoyed it). The way tickets were handled was posting a sign up on the board at CAP. So more than likely the office number above might be able to help you out with this show also - if you are interested.

Last, I will try to answer the other question that you asked me awhile ago
regarding my d's liking cap. Yes she did like CAP. But you have to understand my d to know why she left for her 3rd year. First of all she is the kind of kid that has a lot of interests and wants to do it all. Along with mt programs, she looked at and considered schools like Sarah Lawrence and Brown to have opportunities to expand. Ultimately she choose NYU because she saw it as kind of a "liberal arts conservatory" with lots of choices and opportunities to jump around and it was in the city she wanted to be in. She has done a lot of performance and studied dance all her life, but also loves literature, writing, history. She found out she loves directing and choreographing. She has directed and chorerographed 2 shows in the last year and started her own theater company. She interned at a small off-broadway theater this past summer assisting directors and producers and wrote articles and reviews for their website. This year she took a special studio offering from Tisch which involved writing political musical theater taught by Elizabeth Swados (Pulitzer prize for her play Runaways, etc) because she felt she personally would be challenged in this studio and was impressed with this playwrights work. She also wanted to study abroad - so as we speak she is in Prague loving it and doing a million things (ie along with academics and travel she even found an acting and dance class to take!!!!) ... sorry this is so long, but I am reluctant to say what schools, programs my daughters picked over others without explaining their interests and backgrounds. I don't want to offend anyone who has other opinions - because lets face it there are lots of great programs out there and they are all a little different. The key is finding the right fit for you.

Studio7- thank you so much for the information. I'll be sure to call right away to check it out.

Your daughter and I sound very similar. The trouble I'm facing in my search is getting the right balance. While I want to be performing when I grow up, and therefore hope to attend a school that will allow me to become competitive in the acting world, I don't want to abandon my other interests; academic and otherwise. Right now I'm exploring a number of options- honors programs and double majors within some conservatory BFA programs, as well as strong performance based B.A. majors at some major universities. This February break I'm hoping to visit NYU (and see Grand Hotel and maybe Smile- which I was in at Stagedoor Manor and love- if I can get tickets), Yale, Vassar and Cornell. I'm going to try to meet with the heads of the theater programs at the last three, and sit in on some drama and english classes. I'm going to stay overnight with a musical theater lover at Cornell, who is majoring in drama but took this path because she is also interested in other academics. Sounds like a match for me. In addition to performing when I grow up, I want to write- musicals and plays- I want to direct, I want to explore every avenue! I'm hoping I'll find a place where I can do it all. I hope your daughter is having the time of her life in Prague (wow!) and is finding fulfillment in her exploration!!

Also- do you mind giving a quick quick review of Sarah Lawrence and Brown? I was looking at the two of these. It's hard to know, without visiting, which ones to keep on the list and which to cross off!! I'll end up visiting 100 schools this year and costing my parents a fortune before I know it.

P.S.- Seussical was SO MUCH FUN! Maybe this should go on the bragging board- but our Cat in The Hat just got a drama callback from Julliard ;) !! I was Gertrude McFuzz and I'm missing my one feathered tail and all my Seussabees !! I can't believe your D met Ahrens! I'm so jealous. I love that duo. I was just in their first show- Lucky Stiff- at school and the music was wonderful. If any of you get the chance- listen to the song "Times Like This"- favorite song I've ever performed.

Sarah Lawrence & Brown:

Dizzydani88 - although this is not audition info. (the name of this page), I have a little info. for you. We visited Sarah Lawrence when in NYC. It is a neat little school with the most unusual requirements - very flexible - no real grades - small discussion-style classrooms where the students sit around and talk - students interview faculty to decide if they want to take a class with them. They have a good reputation in theatre, music, and dance (I think dance, don't remember for sure), but their theatre dept. seems to do mostly straight plays and not musicals, in other words, not a combined MT program. It is an easy trip from the city if you wanted to visit. We also wanted to visit Vassar because their drama program sounds good on paper, but it was too far away when we were there and didn't work in our schedule.

My son has a friend going ED to Brown next year. His mom told me there are no real requirements and that students can take whatever they want. I could get you in touch with him if you want more and if you want to send me an e-mail.

Dani, as you know, my older daughter is a freshman at Brown. First off, if you visit, let me know as I will get you in touch with her (I just did this with another College Confidential family last week) and you can overnight with her if you want, have her show you around but also we can connect you with those very involved in musical theater there. First off, a boy from SDM is a junior at Brown now (he went with my younger D who you know) but he also now knows my D at Brown. This boy is very involved in theater at Brown. He is on the board of the student musical theater club (Musical Forum) and not only does their shows but he recently wrote a musical and directed one at Brown. As well, my D's peer advisor is a junior who is also in theater at Brown. Also my D's faculty advisor is in the theater department. My D is not doing theater at Brown (though has done plenty of musical theater and other performing arts but cannot fit that in right now at Brown given that she is also on a varsity sports team there). We can get you in touch with all these people. Theater is big at Brown. We saw Anna in the Tropics (a drama) put on by the department on Parent Weekend and numerous fantastic a capella groups. Also a close friend at SDM who you likely have met (does not go your sessions but her mom works in the office and is friends with our mutual friend, SL) just got in ED to Cornell for next year and she is very involved in musical theater at home and while she is not planning a career in this field (did not go for BFA programs), I am sure she plans to be active in theater at Cornell and she might have some insights for you or even next fall when she is a student there. So, let me know if you want that contact. We also know kids active in theater at Yale. Let me know if you need those contacts.

I did not know that you played Gertrude. We also love Ahrens and Flaherty and their musicals. My D has been Gertrude in another show, not Seussical though. Very fun role.

Studio 7, I appreciate your sharing of your daughter's experiences at Cap. She sounds very talented and accomplished and is doing great things. It interests me because my own daughter, currently an applicant to BFA programs for MT, while wanting to be a musical performer, has also gotten into creating, directing, producing and choreographing shows. She has done two so far, one very recently and loves that end of the process too. In fact, an appealing aspect at many of these programs is that besides Main stage productions, there are opportunties for student run productions. It is helpful to hear of experiences like your D's in such a program and what she has been doing. Did she now switch into another studio? I did not follow that exactly. Is she in Playwrights now? Did she like Cap when she was in it but simply had these other needs/desires? That is what I think you are saying. If you can shed any light about Cap itself, that is always helpful to hear of experiences of those who actually go to these programs. My D has friends in Cap but it always helps to hear a variety of perspective and not put too much weight on one particular person's experiences. If you have anything else you can share about the program/experiences at Cap, I am sure many are interested. I appreciate you point which is an excellent one, that each program is different but many are wonderful but a significant thing is which program fits what a student is looking for and matches their needs/interests.

Does anyone know anything about SETC undergraduate auditions in March?

http://www.setc.org/auditions/secondary.asp

Thanks for the site. My d is already signed up for auditions as a junior. Just wondering what to expect for callbacks.

Break a leg to everyone auditioning everywhere this weekend!

broadwayblondie1 - Yes, my D remembers you from the PP audition and says hello. Good luck with your auditions this weekend.

Did anyone audition on site at Carnegie Mellon? If so, could you tell me how long the day lasted? I'm trying to figure out flight schedules. Thanks!

lynnm,
When my D auditioned at CMU ( 2 years ago now ), the day started early, perhaps around 9:00 am. She wasn't through until late afternoon ( 3:30 or so ) because she was in a small group of students that were asked to perform song and monologue more than once. If asked to stay, they then performed for a different group of auditors. I remember being appreciative that CMU provided boxed lunches for the parents waiting because it was a long day.
