Hi! I'm a junior in highschool and will be staying an extra year because I am in an early college program and can get some free college, however, I have started to think about the material I will perform when I start auditioning for colleges. My vocal range expands from coloratura soprano (I can get up to a high g and sometimes higher), mezzo, belter, and some alto. Any suggestions on songs that are unique and not too popular (I'm open to both dramatic material and comedic. I'll probably need both anyways)? I'm looking at things from song cycles, operettas, rock musical theatre, and classical musical theatre. I can sing pretty much all except the really, really high belt stuff (I think my highest belt is a c..maybe a teensy bit lower). Also monologue help would be appreciated. I've searched Google billions of times and am just not finding things that fit me, or are unique enough. Any help would be appreciated!

Choose songs that fit you, and highlight your best vocals, but not necessarily how high or low you can go. Don’t go for songs because they are “impressive”. Usually REally big songs (Like Astonishing) or really high songs (Like Vanilla Ice Cream) are not a good idea. Students spend months searching for the right material and some spend thousands of dollars. Not kidding. Unique songs for the sake of being unique are not necessarily the goal.

No one here knows who you are as a person, a type, or a vocalist from what you have told us. So any suggestions (other than where to look for material) would likely not be the best ones. You have lots of time to learn and search. You will likely need from MT rep. at least one pre 1960 (golden age) song; one uptempo; one ballad; one belty; one pop; one legit. And the pair you choose to sing should contrast. They need to be “cutable” to 16 and 32 bars. You will need two one minute contemporary monologues: one dramatic, one comedic, and for a couple of schools you may need a classic monologue. Those are usually 90 seconds. You will also need a 60 dance video for many schools. Possibly two or three depending on the school.

Reading posts in this forum will give you a wealth of information. Good luck!

One thing that can be helpful is to watch videos of past YpungArts finalists to get both monologue and song ideas.
