Hi!
I’m currently a senior in high school and I have decided to audition for some musical theater programs. I’m trying to find the right audition songs currently.
I have a pretty big range that allows me comfortably to sing soprano and mezzo songs and I can do legit or belt.
Would it be best if I choose one cut as mezzo-belter and one legit soprano? Or should I try to just present myself as one kind of vocalist to better fit into type?
Sorry to give you a non-answer, but it depends on the school. Overall, though, you want to have a whole arsenal of song styles and cuts prepared, same as with monologues.
I think contrast is always a good thing, in both songs and monologues. So a Golden Age legit soprano ballad and a modern, uptempo mezzo belt song would be awesome in my opinion, IF you’re equally good at both. (If you’re amazing at one and only “okay” at the other, then play to your strength.)
