Audition song question

Hi.

I’m wondering if anyone with previous audition experience could help me with this.

Michigan asks for a 32-bar cut of the up tempo song. The particular song I’m doing is very fast and mostly in 2/4, so a 32 bars of this song is much shorter than 32 bars of a more traditional song. I’m planning on preparing a slightly longer selection, and telling them at the audition to cut me off if necessary. Is this a good plan, or does it really have to be exactly 32 bars? What are people’s experience on this.

Also, I am listing my audition material on the application, but I am worried that I might change my mind about one of my monologues. I am not auditioning till February. Does anyone know if its okay to send them a note later with my final audition material.

Thanks so much!

This may or may not affect you since you did put your repertoire on your application. I made a mistake and put my pieces on the list when I did the online application. When I called, I was told that the MT program at Michigan did not require the rep on the application. You can call 734-764-0593 (School of Music, Theatre and Dance) for information concerning your case. Hope this helps!!

So you're saying you don't need to list your audition pieces at all on the application?!

What a relief! I was really stressing out about my monogue selection! Thanks! You are awesome!

I think you can change your mind up to about 2 weeks beore, when they ask you for your selection. I also think they want you to have at least 4 prepared, 2 of each... G'luck!

Hi Milkywhite,

I don't know how picky U of M is about audition cuts, but usually no one actually counts how many measures you have. I think the 16 or 32 bar cut is usually a guideline, and if it's a little more than what they ask for, they won't kill you, and they most likely won't even know. And especially since the song is up tempo and in 2/4, I'm pretty sure it'll be okay if you bend the rules a little bit. :)

Good luck with everything!
