I agree with the post above- its sorta risky.

But- Johanna, in my opinion, is one of the best ballds ever written for a male. Its up there with Bring Him Home, The Music of the Night, and a bunch of others.

I would KILL if my voice teacher allowed me to sing Green Finch and Linnet Bird. She said it is too hard a piano part- even though I have the voice part down to a t.

In college, I'm going to learn how to play the Cello so I can audition for that role if the show lasts untill I graduate. I doubt it will- but it can't hurt to dream!

Audition with it if its perfect. Anything else just might not cut it.

Johanna is a song performed by the character Antony, who is very young (like early 20's). Johanna was so perfect because I'm a baritone/bass and it let me show off my legit style without making me strain to hit G's and A's (like in Make Our Garden Grow from Candide or Something's Coming from West Side Story- things I've already considered singing). I have no clue what to sing now, since I have nothing like Johanna in my repritore (bad spelling sry). I'm sorry to beg, but any ideas as to where to look for a legit musical theater ballad would be greatly appreciated.

Go back to the classics like Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Lowe, Gershwin, Berlin and Porter. No luck there? Then take a look at more modern composers like Yeston, Schwartz, Ahrens/Flaherty, Tesori. Review the old threads here having to do with choosing songs. There are many shows that have ballads for young men.

But here's another idea (good for you and others):

Is there a performer out there who you emulate? Whose voice has a similar sound to your own? Then do an internet search and see what roles he has done. Chances are there is something on his resume that will be perfect for you.

The important thing to find out is if the school wants a classical piece and whether they want verse or prose. Then search accordingly.

Shakespeare is always a good choice for verse, or Molliere or Calderon, etc.

The Greeks are a good idea for classical as is Sherridan, Wycherly, Concreive.(please forgive my spelling) There are many, many others and it depends on whether you feel comfortable with Restoration Comedy, Farce, Tragedy etc.

Call and ask the school which they prefer to be sure.

I don't know which song you want from this musical. I looked up the musical to get the song titles as I am not familiar with this musical. I then did some searching for the various songs.

I found one song, though I do not know if it is the one you want, but figure I'll pass it on in case...

Song: "Is He the Only Man in the World"

Located in either:

The Irving Berlin Fake Book
or
The 16 Bar Theater Audition (book)

I am supposed to be auditioning for a musical in two weeks with 16 measures of a song from a contemporary musical.
The only problem with this is i don't have any idea what to use, I think I might be an alto with a very small range that ussually sounds bad, though I am not ussually off key. oh and I'm an 18 year old girl. I'm acutally only a techie, but the audition is required bc I'm a theatre scholarship student and so I have to audition for all of our shows. Does anyone have any ideas?

Get a CD of the song you are singing, and sing with it all the time. Hopefully your sheet music is in the same key though. Could you have someone look at it who reads music and has a piano?

Hey Everyone! ~ k so i'm new to the boards and hopefully this message gets posted correctly.... Just a quick question about song choice...I am a petite girl (5'2"), small frame, blonde hair, blue eyes, very All-American/Girl Next Door, with a high soprano voice, very light quality (i.e. someone such as Barbara Cook)...My voice teacher would like me to sing "If you hadn't but you did" from the early musical Two on the Aisle...the problem is that it is on Kristen Chenowith's 2001 cd and I do not know if that makes the song taboo at college auditions...I thought perhaps I could get away with it because it is more of a character song rather than a legit ballad (which seems much more likely to be a piece for comparison between my voice and Chenowith's) ....what would y'all conclude? Thanks! :)

Does anyone know where I can find one minute contemporary monologues? (One comic, one serious) All the contemporary ones I've found so far are either really long or with dialogue cut out of them, and I know classics much better than contemporary. I'm worried, because I've had no luck in finding any, and time is running out before Unifieds in Feb! I don't even know where to start. Help!

My d found several good contemporary monologues at www.playscripts.com where you can preview and purchase contemporary scripts. I know she used at least one from this source at her college auditions last year and was very successful.

Though not everyone has heard her cd - this group of people probably has and Kristin has done this song consistently in concert. I have also been told that "patter" songs should not be used for college auditions.

okay I'm having second thoughts about the ballad I chose for my first audition (syracuse) which was/is"A Quiet Thing"

my other choice would be Time Heals Everything.....is that WAY overdone or do you think it's fine if I do it really well?

my other song is REALLY rare so that's what makes me think it might be okay to do a so/so well known song like Time Heals Everything.....

let me know...kind of urgent considering my audition is jan 21 lol
i would really appreciate your help!

p.s. beastar-- you might want to try your local library or a borders or something-I did that a couple of times and found some good stuff...it's fun too. drama/plays section.
