audition songs/ monologues

If because of time limits you have made cuts in the monologue, it might be clearer if you simply type it out exactly as you plan to deliver it. (And of course, include the name of the play and the author.) If you have not cut the monologue, it would probably be okay to make a photocopy of the page from the script.

is millie forever off limits

I truly believe that most songs from Millie, particularly the female ones, are very overdone and I suggest finding other options. You do NOT need to find the most unique song that nobody else will sing, but doing the MOST overdone ones, is not advisable. Not only are Millie songs overdone, but they have the potential of coming across as the applicant may be somewhat “green” and not be a student of the MT repertoire and isn’t aware of MT songs beyond the most popular ones of the day. I’d say the same of songs from Wicked.

ok. that’s what I figured. I guess the same of anything sutton foster has been in?

I would not rule out all shows Sutton Foster has been in, nor all songs that Sutton Foster sings! I consider Astonishing overdone (not as bad as doing Millie but still overdone at college auditions).

One thing an applicant can do is to find MT singers who have similar voice types to themselves and listen to the songs that that singer sings. So, if you have a voice similar in type to Sutton, listen to many songs she sings. Listen to several MT artists who are your voice type and find songs in their repertoire, for example.

thank you! I was considering jimmy, but I will look elswhere!

I don’t know when your auditions are but imagine they are very soon. If you have no other songs polished (let alone selected) by now, you may wish to go with Jimmy if you have worked on it a LOT already. This is late to be selecting audition material for such a major audition. Jimmy is a little better than choosing Gimme Gimme, Not for the Life of Me, or Forget About the Boy. But I would not have done Millie if you have other songs that show you off well that you have learned. Have you not learned any other songs in the past year? Just saying that finding and preparing a song with just a week or two to go is also not ideal. Being well prepared and singing a song that shows you off very well is more important than how overdone or not the song may be. Something to consider. Had you asked this question and had several songs you knew or prepared, I’d have said not to do Millie. If this is all you have prepared, go with Jimmy. Then again, if you are merely “considering” Jimmy but haven’t worked on it a LOT, then choose something else that you also haven’t worked on a lot but that is not overdone.

oh no I have about 8 songs ready to go i’m just downsizing a little bit.

In that case, and while I don’t know your other options, let alone don’t know your skill set or type, choose songs that are not from Millie that you have also prepared. Sounds like you will be fine.

hello, all! I’m sorry to interrupt the thread, but I have a question that I felt didn’t need an entire thread of its own to answer. I have an upcoming audition that asks for two contrasting pieces, ballad and uptempo, both 32 bars. I’m a lyric soprano who has been singing a lot of mezzo parts lately, so I’m also getting comfortable in that range.

I already know my uptempo: ‘Green Finch and Linnet Bird’ (unless it’s considered a ballad, but I thought the pace of it more… uptempo-esque?). however, I’m stuck on several options for a ballad. I’m thinking either ‘Home’ from Yeston & Kopit’s ‘Phantom’, or ‘What Good Would the Moon Be?’ from ‘Street Scene’. do either of these provide enough of a contrast to ‘Green Finch’, and, if not, could you please provide some other suggestions?

thank you all so much! I really appreciate any opinions. =D

(I can’t figure out how to edit my post, so I’d like to just say here that I’m pretty much set on singing ‘What Good Would the Moon Be?’ as opposed to ‘Home’. would this be a good contrast to ‘Green Finch’?)

Hello, everyone. I am a junior in high school, and I am about to try out for this year’s musical, The Music Man. I am going for the character of Marian Paroo. I am a mezzo-soprano.

I had originally considered singing “Honey Bun” from South Pacific or “Defying Gravity” from Wicked, but I’m not sure how well that would show off my mezzo-soprano voice. I’m really nervous and excited at the same time (well, there’s a cliche for a thespian!).

I was in a production of The Music Man, Jr. in my primary school (2nd-8th grade) when I was in the 4th grade. I almost got the part of **Amaryllis/B, but a fifth grader beat me out. (Darn! :P)
I’m at a loss about what to do for a monologue & song this time around.

Any suggestions by tomorrow (sorry for my late posting) would be greatly appreciated (I plan on trying out on Friday).

Which reminds me, auditions are set for this week, Tuesday-Friday. Which day (disregarding conflicts) do you think might be the best for me to try out on? Would they remember me better if I came on the last day, or would that make it appear as though I wasn’t as interested as others who came earlier in the week? --I know the people who are running the play, because I’ve been in the past 2 productions, and I got a part as Lottie Child last year in Crazy For You, but I’m not sure how much that will help.

Thanks!

hi, lyricalmelody! these are just my two cents:

I’m also a highschool junior, and I played the role of Marian Paroo this summer in the local theatre’s production of ‘The Music Man.’ my audition song was ‘If I Loved You’ from Carousel. I have been doing a lot of research about audition songs lately, however, and apparently ‘If I Loved You’ is sometimes considered to be overused. regardless, I know that the song worked for me, and that it is stylistically quite similar to Marian’s songs (‘My White Knight’ in particular).

regarding on which day to audition, I’m not sure. most auditions in my neck of the woods only run for two days, and I usually audition at the second one but attend the first one to ‘scope out the competition.’ (: I’m not sure if this is considered bad form or something, but I do like to see who’s auditioning and who is singing what.

Neither “Honey Bun” or “Defying Gravity” would work for Marian, in my opinion. Both are sort of mezzo-belts, and Marian is definitely a soprano who does some mixing/belting. She does have to have a nice lower range, but with songs like “Till There Was You”, you need to show you’re upper range in the audition.

Sngs that are overdone but Perfect for Marian:

-“I Could Have Danced All Night” from My Fair Lady
-“Hello Young Lovers” from The King and I
-“As long as He Needs Me” from Oliver
-“If I Loved You” from Carousel
-“Out of My Dreams” from Oklahoma!
-“I Could Have Danced All Night” from My Fair Lady
-“I’ve Never Been In Love Before” from Guys and Dolls
-“If I Were a Bell” from Guys and Dolls

Some less-done (but not crazy obscure) songs:

-“A Quiet Thing” from Flora the Red Menace
-“Love Changes Everything” from Aspects of Love

Hi everyone!
So, like many before me, I’m looking for 2 contrasting monologues.
I’m doing a theater camp in new york this summer and need two contrasting pieces that can fit me, a short, skinny, quirky, 16 year old :]
I sent my adviser two pieces: one from Change by Eric Kaiser and the second from Red Angel by Eric Bogosian. She said neither were age appropriate, so I’m starting from scratch. Any ideas would be incredibly appreciated!
it wold rock my world if anyone had any ideas! THANKS

Okay, time for us to jump in here too. I have dutifully read as much of the archives as I can on this but with so many pages please forgive if I ask something already answered several times 20 pages back.

I know you can’t pick a song for d for obvious reasons, but just for reference, her “type” I guess ~ well she’s pretty enough for ingenue but her personality is definitely good for the goofy, eccentric, or more character type character. She looks like a fun sized Anne Hathaway - she’s five foot tall and consists mostly of huge dark eyes and brown hair and massive grin.

If she were to strap down her bust she could get away with looking as young as 14 and if she does her hair in a bump and lots of makeup she can look a young 20’s.

Voice can do alto, mezzo, or soprano, depending on the song and how much of it is in her newly just barely conquered passagio. She has only been singing two years and has vastly improved but needs a LOT more work, but she’s definitely trainable. Dance is her advantage I think, from 14 years in a very good studio, and acting is probably what comes best to her naturally. (though of course she need coaching)

Here are some songs I am not terribly familiar with, because the songs I know best are all on the “no” list. But I think they might be suitable. Are any of these a “no” for reasons I have overlooked? Also if you think they are unsuitable for a semi ingenue or character type young lady or if they are more challenging than I realize. I am NOT a singer myself and this is all territory which I have very little knowledge.

Mariah, All For Him, How Can I Wait - Paint your Wagon

It Might As Well Be Spring, It’s a Grand Night For Singing, Never Say No To A Man, The Next Time it Happens - State Fair

Anything Goes, Goodbye Little Dream Goodbye - from Anything Goes

One Man, Wonderful Wonderful Day, Going Courtin, When You’re in Love, June Bride, Glad That You were Born - Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

Look to the Rainbow, If This Isn’t Love, The Begat - Finnian’s Rainbow

I’ll have more to look at later I’m sure.

Thoughts on these? Are any on the “no” list or just a bad idea for some reason? Whether or not they work for her voice is ultimately for her voice coach and herself to decide.

I don’t know about all of the songs on the list - but looks like you are off to a good start and looking at songs that are not over-used.

One song that would probably be a “no” - Mariah (They Call the Wind Mariah) is sung by a man in “Paint Your Wagon”

If a song is yet in her range, even though done by a man in the production, does that still necessarily make it a no? That’s probably a dumb question. But still, hate to turn down a song that might really showcase her voice without understanding exactly why.

snapdragonfly - Although the song may be in your D’s range I still would stick with songs for woman. The advice we got when my D was preparing to audition for Fall 2010 was that the songs and monologues should be characters that your D would actually be able to play. It is great that your D is working now to get the songs and monologues nailed down. My D had all of her material selected by the end of last summer so she had plenty of time to work on it prior to auditions. Good luck!

Keep in mind that you want to make sure that songs are cuttable to a true 16 bars - if they’re in cut (2/4 time), some great songs unfortunately just can’t be cut to a strong 16 that still has a story (with a beginning, middle, and end). Some schools are flexible about exact number of bars and some are not.
