theartsedge who specialize in this kind of thing might be a good resource. they are also offering scholarships.

Thanks all for the advice.

Hey, is stuff from Singing in the Rain overdone - and in fact is that technically acceptable?because I don’t know if it was ever actually a play!

Is Fiddler on the Roof overdone? Her first post preadolesence role was Chava and I still get all choked up when I think about it . “Far from the Home I love” or “Matchmaker Matchmaker”? Even though that song is generally done with the three girls, could a song that has two or more parts in it acceptable anyway?

Is Bye Bye Birdie overdone?

Yes, Singing in the Rain is a play, and no, it’s not overdone. Fiddler & Birdie are pretty popular choices for young girls; but I don’t think any of those songs are on any “Do Not Sing” lists.

Thank you, onstage.

Okay here’s another one and I had no idea it was a musical.

What about “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again” from “Promises Promises”? I don’t know if my daughter will be as big a Burt Bacharach fan as I am :-). Is that too “popular” sounding, or is it old enough to offset that?

And is it too connected to Dionne Warwick?

Also “I Say A Little Prayer”. Is that too mature? Though I could see a young 20’s - late teen having a job with a coffee break.

Apparently these have been recently done by Kristin Chenowith. Is that good (getting away from the Dionne stamp) or bad (OMG quit copying Kristin Chenowith lol)

Promises Promises is currently running on Broadway, starring Kristen Chenoweth. It’s usually best to stay away from shows that are currently running – if it’s not overdone right now, it likely will be within a year!
“I Say a Little Prayer” is not from a musical. (Unless they added that one to the revival – I haven’t heard the cast album yet. In which case, it’s from a currently running show.)

Yep, I just checked and “Prayer” has been added to the revival! I love anything by Bacharach, personally – but with Kristen’s popularity I’ll bet these two songs will get snapped up by a lot of singers.

Ah. Rats.

I never thought I’d live to see the day when the kiddos would appreciate Bacharach. I’m a huge fan of his. You know his stuff is covered by people you would never think…The Strokes did a rather amazing version of “Walk on By”.

Makes me think that none of his songs could really be “owned” by anyone except for the fabulous Ms Warwick, but, that is my perspective and I don’t think it’s in step with the majority.

It’s too bad too, because his music strikes me as not especially technically hard to do (not like say Sondheim) - it’s the personality that Dionne Warwick had that made her such a perfect muse for Bacharach. Not that she isn’t technically just perfect, but that’s not what made it such an amazing pairing, it was that she was such a good vehicle for him. That is one of Bacharach’s geniuses I think - his stuff is so singable. Any talentless ordinary person can hum along with his stuff. (not that anyone would want to hear talentless people like me actually doing that, but it’s easy for us to do, unlike other really tough numbers.) Not sounding like a big star or anything but you can sing along, you know?

Which means that a singer with an immature voice could do those songs without struggling as much as some others, but, looks as if they are on the “no” list. Darn.

~though my own little town is so, shall we say not cutting edge, that I bet it doesn’t pop up on anyone’s radar here for another 2 years except for the hardcore theater monkeys. heh.

After the recent Glee episode that featured Bacharach, I bet he’s going to have a resurgence – especially the songs that were featured on that show. Even in your town (which sounds very much like mine!)

In addition to the “rule” about not doing a song from a show currently on Broadway, I think I would probably add - don’t do one that has been on a Glee episode - I’m betting WAY too many people will have “discovered” it!

Oh that’s a good point. Yeah, we love Glee, but at several numbers a week they have the potential to burn through a lot of good songs…

~the choice of songs is going to be getting rather frighteningly narrow…I wonder if the only songs left not on a “no” list are going to be songs that nobody wants to sing for a good reason… yikes!

Thought I would link to this list since it seems appropriate for the discussion:

You can also use a search like Genius Sidebar feature on iTunes to find similar songs. I have fun doing this “just because” but it can be a useful tool to help introduce you to new music.

That’s a gift for sure! Thanks, austinmtmom and doctorjohn who started the thread!

It says something on one of the posts about some of those old songs Kristin Chenoweth is doing being standards and not her signature songs. But I suppose they’ll be on the ‘no’ list on account of every Gleek out there doing them at auditions, plus some are in a revival that is still playing. (I thought it was from rather more long ago but I was wrong)

Don’t let them see this thread! lol! Gotta leave something for the rest of us!

Okay, looking at Gerschwin.

Is “Someone to watch over me” overdone? I remember it from “Mr. Holland’s Opus” and wonder if everyone sings it on account of that.

Snapdragonfly – I have a sneaking suspicion you are around my age (LOL)-- your references to Dionne Warwick and Mr. Holland’s Opus are very familiar to me, but probably won’t be to most of the high-schoolers out there!
However, “Someone To Watch” was in the musical Crazy For You. It’s pretty well known for that reason; it is a great song for a legit soprano voice. I don’t think it’s overdone; but there are MANY wonderful Gershwin songs that aren’t quite as popular or well-known.

My daughter, who is now 21, was really into Mr. Holland’s Opus when she was growing up!

I love that movie. :)

So what I’ve gotten is that Cole Porter is a great choice, one of the staples of the great classic canon, and we’ve found a few that we think would be good for d, but guess what??

Sutton Foster will be in a revival in 2011.

So does this mean that everything in THAT is now verboten too?

Only the songs from “Anything Goes”, if that’s the revival you’re talking about. Cole Porter wrote many other great songs!

For modern musicals - is there any reason to avoid “Jane Eyre” or “The Scarlet Pimpernell”?

(forgive me if those were mentioned already and I missed them)

edit: oh I see where TSP was on the No list back in 2006 but is it still?

I don’t think either of those are SUPER overused, but they’re often difficult to play for some pianists. That may be why they are on the no-no list. But I’m not exceedingly familiar with either piece.
