Audition stories - Class of 2020

You’re very welcome! Sry I didn’t get word on decisions. I know that acceptance into the university itself is rolling but I don’t know about the MT department. @jbrideau

Unless things have changed for this year, Montclair is rolling for MT admissions.

Thanks GSOMTMom! Do you remember how long it takes after the audition to hear?

@jbrideau My D auditioned at Pace Saturday afternoon for MT and loved it! (Helps she had friends working the auditions). Ran a bit overtime (the morning session did too) was supposed to be done 5:30p and we got out after 6p because my daughter went last. Split kids up into 2 groups some who danced first and the rest did monologues/songs. Had heard prior that Pace had the hardest dance call and D agreed. Lot of fun, but very specific and fast. Very friendly people. Heard they would hear sometime in March.

Thanks for the Pace and Montclair info everyone! Good luck to all!

It was a long while for my daughter because she was a transfer student and the transfer application opened after her audition. From the posts here and people I know who were accepted, there didn’t seem to be a definite timeframe. Another wait for it, wait for it, wait.

Son has CCM auditions this weekend. When will this ever end?

You’ll look back at this last year in disbelief and awe. At least, that’s what my D and I occasionally do!

D had her artistic review at NYU Tisch on Saturday morning (before the Gov/Mayor called state of emergency & they had to cancel afternoon & evening sessions). Info session was very upbeat (with Chris Andersson, Dir. of Admissions) & had us very much in danger of falling in love with the school (his explanation of the 8 studios and comments about why it’s OK for people who dream of performing in MT to consider being placed in one of the acting studios instead were very enlightening). Then the kids were taken upstairs and split into groups. D said she was the first to go in for singing - they asked her for 2 songs, then she immediately went into the second room and did 2 monologues. She said the auditors were attentive but did look at their screens to type periodically; both very gracious and kind. She was not given any direction during either. During the interview portions, she was asked her favorite book and also what she does outside of MT. She felt it was a nice conversation. Dance call was fun - the instructor basically told her group of 8 - you are going to mess up, you might not even get the whole dance by the time we start, but have a good time and show us how you move. That helped her to relax and she thought she did well &, at least, kept her face and body relaxed even when she wasn’t sure of the next move. She was one of the first to finish. So glad we decided to book the morning session instead of wait. As we were leaving, a young lady & her parents were arriving for the afternoon session…apparently hadn’t’ seen the email notifying of the cancellation. We felt very sad for her. All in all a positive experience.

Yeah my daughter enjoyed the Pace audition as well. When they broke the students up they had student leaders (current Pace students) guide them to where they had to go. She loved her student leader. He was nice and encouraging. She also felt like her fellow “auditionees” were really nice too. She said mom we didn’t talk about schools or auditions. We didn’t even talk about shows that we did. We just talked about regular stuff and that was awesome!

Just got back from University of Alabama for their last audition day. Awesome experience! The program is an audition entry BA , with the likelihood of becoming a BFA within the next few years. The program has a New York showcase senior year and they are producing working students. They are constructing a brand new facility also! The check-in was smooth, intro with a short performance by an MT student at the parent/student meeting. They broke into groups alphabetically to work on songs with staff. The staff chooses which song they will audition with and works on it for a bit before the actual audition with one song and one monologue. The dance call was about an hour, “challenging and fun” according to my daughter. Great experience overall! Roll Tide?

@crc500 you should check out the youtube series by Matthew Rodin called School’d. He interviews working actors about the colleges they attended and asks some great questions. There is a fabulous one with a current Alabama alum! Other schools he has profiled are Ithaca, Pace, BOCO, Michigan, and CCM. These are a great watch for students and parents alike.

My D had her Carnegie audition this past Saturday. She had such a wonderful experience. She felt confident about her audition material, she saw some friends she hadn’t seen in a long time and the current students were very helpful. I was amazed at how efficient and organized everything was. She checked in at 12 and she was done by around 2pm. I was totally prepared to be there a lot longer because her Pace audition was a long day. Now Carnegie didn’t have a dance audition so that may have been the difference. Her vocal audition was first. She was really happy because her voice was in very good shape and they seemed to enjoy it. So we’ll see what happens. Regardless of the outcome she definitely had a great day.

Most certainly checking that our tonight @MTRaleighmom !

Looks like travel days into Chicago are going to be clear!

@crc500 Roll Tide! I am trying to get my D to audition for Alabama next year, but because her dad (and the majority of his family) live in Ttown she doesn’t feel like she would have the “going away” to school experience. Sounds like it was a cool experience there. A little more pressure with the faculty selecting the song, but exciting. Did your D audition anywhere else in the southeast? My d was recently impressed by a visits to UAB and Belmont. She is a junior and we are constructing “the list” of next years applications/auditions. Would love any info you could share about audition experiences. Not too many on this board in the SE. Feel free to PM me.

@brightstaral - you didn’t ask me, but D really enjoyed her audition for UAB at Chicago Unifieds. She was actually their first audition of the week (walk-in, at that), and they really engaged with her, offering some direction & working with her a bit, and then they pulled me into the room to talk about the program & how it’s developing, answer questions, etc. Even gave us homemade cookies as we left! Super friendly & enthusiastic. They weren’t on her map before then but she gives them more and more thought as we talk about the possibilities & she’s looking to learn what she can about the school/area since a campus visit won’t be possible for us before decisions are made on their part…

@brightstaral, my D had several great OOS options last year, and no one was more surprised than me when she opted for the school 40 mins. from our house. She is so wrapped up in her life there (as she should be) with classes, rehearsals, and friends that we rarely see her. The big exception (perk) being that we can attend all performances without scheduling major travel. Theatre majors have a very different experience than most other college majors, and have very little free time. My D starts at 8:00, and is rarely back in her dorm before 11:00. I think your D would find (especially at a school the size of Alabama) that she might as well be on a different planet.

BALL STATE UNIVERSITY 2/27/2016

First up was (obviously) check in. Walked in, got a number to pin to my leotard for the dance call, and an audition form to fill out. I filled the form out and then waited a bit.

Shortly after that, they took us (as in all of us: musical theatre, acting, directing, theatre education, etc AND parents) upstairs for a short introductory meeting. Staff members were introduced and then we got to hear an INCREDIBLE senior sing Burn from Hamilton. She was wonderful and it was nice to just sit back and watch her for a moment… Took away some stress

Then, everyone but the musical theatre kids went elsewhere. We stayed in that room for the dance call. As someone with very little dance experience, I thought it was difficult. The dance wasn’t too long however, which was nice. The steps themselves were rather simple but it was very quick so that was hard for me. We broke up into groups of 5 and did the dance once for the judges. The dance instructor was very friendly and helpful, not to mention hilarious! There were current dance majors scattered through the group who we could ask for help with the steps, which was a great touch.

After that, we went into a different room to check in for our singing/acting audition slots. We turned in our headshots and changed into our audition clothes. After that, we all just sat and waited for a while. The current students mingled with us and were super friendly and helpful! The auditors seemed to be taking a good amount of time with each auditioner, so we ran behind schedule (I was scheduled for the 1:00 time slot, but didn’t audition until 2:30).

When I walked into the audition room, one thing that took me aback was how many people were in there!! I’d say about 10-12, several of them being current students. It wasn’t really a big deal of course, it was just more than I expected. The accompanist was very friendly.

I kinda bombed my first song, due to nerves. I then did my monologue. After my monologue, they asked me to sing a second song, which went a lot better. I think the fact that they saw potential in my singing and allowed me a second chance really speaks to how kind the faculty is. They were all so friendly, and really wanted every person to excel.

They asked me if I had any questions about the program, and that was that!

The one overarching theme for the day is just how kind the people at Ball State are. Not only did I witness it myself, but I heard this comment from other auditioners and parents. Truly a nurturing environment, and even though I am not thrilled with how I performed, I left the campus feeling happy. Great experience.

@gmo913, my D loved her audition at Ball State back in November!! She felt the same as you! Are they still planning on notifying all in early March?
