I know there’s already a lot of discussion on here about audition attire, but I couldn’t find anything about this specifically. One of my monologues has a lot of movement, and so I can’t wear a dress/skirt. I do have dress pants, but honestly because of the extensive movement, I wouldn’t feel very comfortable in them. I want to wear leggings, ideally. Is that too casual? Would I stand out in a bad way for wearing leggings and a solid colored top?
hi @iowanactress there are several discussions about what to wear and some have posted their experiences. Here is a link to some more recent posts Good luck with your auditions <3

@iowanactress - the thread above contains good info. That said… acting auditions tend to be more “casual” than MT. If you have a “dressier” top, and maybe some nice boots, I can see it working. You obviously want to make a good impression with your outfit (aka not look like you rolled out of bed and into the audition room) but the most important thing is to show them YOU
My daughter changed into black leggings and a black top for a couple (movement call/call back) - but I guess maybe she was supposed to for those schools. She wore a plain black cotton dress otherwise -very plain and simple. Didn’t seem to make a difference (she had good results and several acceptances, but did have rejections too — doubt any of them were related to her outfit).
Several programs have their students wear blacks to theater class (which usually means leggings and a t-shirt). I would think most auditors are used to seeing actors in black leggings and a top…
Wear what you are comfortable in. Just make sure the leggings and top look nice and neat and pair with nice flats or something. You may not see others in leggings, but that is ok. We saw just about any type of dress you can think of (jeans, cocktail dresses, nice pants, short skirts, long skirts, casual dresses, etc).
You have to wear what works for your monologues and the movement may be the key that gets you noticed by a program. I’m sure they would rather you be in leggings and be able to truly move than be restricted in other clothes. Especially some of the programs that really focus on movement (that is what they are looking for!). good luck
My d found black jeans that were a cotton/spandex blend and were very comfortable – the key is just feeling really good in what you are wearing so you don’t worry about that!
D ended up in a school that required Black I studio … made shopping easy last few years
D2 is auditioning mostly MT in (gasp) pants. Yep. Pants. She has some really cute tops and boots to go with them. We bought an audition “uniform dress” and she hates it. She may look for one dress before Unifieds but she’s pretty sure she will be wearing pants. She did a day of mocks on Wednesday and her outfits were perfectly fine (and she was comfortable). She moves quite a bit in one of her monologues so she doesn’t feel a dress is going to work.
Leggings are totally fine, and very common for auditions. Black is best, but any solid color is okay.
@iowanactress One idea with leggings would be a cute tunic dress/top that is a loose style. That dresses up the leggings look. Not a dressy dress but a casual tunic style dress. Just a thought.
@artskids…My D auditioned just for MT programs and for many of them she wore dress pants, not a dress.
For some auditions, she wore a skirt.
Didn’t wear a dress to any of her auditions.
Good results.
My acting D didn’t wear a skirt or a dress but as I looked around The Palmer House two years ago, and at Fall auditions this year, I notice the “MT Uniform.” At mocks in December and they said don’t fall for the uniform look - wear what you are comfortable wearing, will allow movement and looks neat. Many of the girls were in leggings, pants, rompers (all over the board). She said it was refreshing to see!
@artskids, what is the MT Uniform and what are mocks? Sorry for the questions, I’m a new college MT mom.
Sorry “mocks” are mock auditions. The MT Uniform is the jewel-toned (or single-color) a-line dress, nude tights, nude character shoes :-). It is obviously not really a uniform but a very popular look.
