Auditioning for Drama and Musical Theatre

Amy, yes, she has now decided to attend CAP21!

Congrats Susan - to you and your D!! Isn't she just the shining example of ending up where you are "supposed" to be? I have such powerful memories of your early postings and her strong interest in Cap 21. But I give you and her so much credit for keeping an open mind and doing your research and making all the trips and auditions so that when decision time came you were so well informed and had wonderful, real choices. I have always had the feeling that she was meant to be in NYC at CAP21. She is clearly going to be very successful and happy. I am so happy for you both!

Also, just think of what a win-win your decision is for so many others.......with all the acceptances she had and will now turn down, there are so many kids who will get happy calls about getting in from waiting lists. Hooray!!

BTW, in about a half hour or so, check the thread on summer employment. After I post about our weekend in Ann Arbor for the UM Freshman Showcase, I have some very exciting news to share........

Susan,
Congrats to your daughter! What a relief to have made the decision. Although my son didn't get assigned to CAP, he has been as happy and busy as can be throughout his first year. In general, he has found all (faculty and fellow students) at NYU to be bright, friendly and supportive. I've been amazed at the maturity and confidence that has emerged in less than a year. Looking forward to your futuer posts.

no, believe me they aren't having trouble filling their spots. and i really don't know what's been done in past years, but i don't believe this is a new thing. they simply have 3 audition weekends and april is one of them. all three rounds of their auditions have been more than full and this one is also.

Thank you TheaterMom! Yeah, it has kinda come "full circle" for my daughter in this college process. For many years she had wanted to go to Tisch/Cap21, way before we even remotely thought about colleges. I think at that time, it was more based on knowing many kids who went to Tisch and that's really all she knew. Plus she loves NYC to boot.

Then last winter when she asked us to let her graduate a year early, we had not even started looking into colleges because she was in tenth grade and we were already in the midst of our senior daughter's process at the time. So we set out to visit schools but only got to see NYU last year due to her schedule. She thoroughly researched each program on paper and in talking with others. She seriously considered applying ED to NYU/Tisch but before making such a binding committment, agreed that it would be wise to visit another top choice of hers and so in September we went to visit UMich and she ended up loving that program as much, if not more than NYU and decided that she would not apply ED to NYU as she wanted to see what happened and to consider all options and she still could apply RD to NYU so she was not losing anything other than the "advantage" in odds of admission that accompany an ED application process. So, we entered the entire audition/application process full throttle and got to see two more schools in the fall as well. The other four we had to see for the first time when attending the auditions on site. Knowing how competitive it is to be admitted and the very low odds, she began to keep an open mind and tried to explore each college fully as she knew she might not have any choice come spring. And sure enough, at each college, she really liked most of them a real lot. We often came home from an audition and she would say, "I could really go there! I loved it". She could see that they were all different but they were all very good. She liked some over others but would have been content to attend any of them. She said she had no clear first choice any more because that would just set herself up for disapointment given the odds and she truly now liked so many of the program. The college visits had done the job we set out to do, to really explore all programs. And when the acceptances came at various intervals and first she had just one, she was open to thinking of going to that one. When she had two, she preferred one over the other and never thought much past those choices as she knew it might just come to that and she'd be happy. She seriously considered each program. Now, with all the results in, she has opted to go to NYU, a lifelong favorite. On the one hand, she jokes that she could have eliminated all the stress and time that went into auditions all winter had she done ED to Tisch, but admits that she is very glad she went through it all because now she really knows and can judge that this is the right choice for her amongst her options, even though she was thrilled and would be VERY happy to attend her other options! It is almost hard to let them go. I think each school has its pros and they just differ. I know also that originally she wanted a BFA program that also has a little bit of liberal arts as she does want an education and is a strong student too. That was another attractive thing about UM but also NYU as well. So, here we are with NYU again at the end of the process, right where she "started". :)

While this played no role in her college decision, she does have several friends entering Tisch next fall, besides ones who currently attend. She did not factor that into her choices. But now that she is going, another girl from VT who had gotten into CAP21 ED, someone with whom she has done shows since she was younger (but does not live in our community) and who at one time then came to her summer theater camp for a few summers as well a while back, is going to room with her.

Lots to look forward to as she goes through her recovery now! However, I am sorry we won't be meeting up with your daughter at UM but maybe in a few years~!

I can't wait to read your exciting news!

Congrats Susan! I'm sure you must be really happy to have the decision behind you! What a process. My D will be glad to hear your news. She asks about your D frequently...wondering how her recovery is going. She'll be happy to hear of her decision. ENJOY!

Mrsark87 "no, believe me they aren't having trouble filling their spots. and i really don't know what's been done in past years, but i don't believe this is a new thing. they simply have 3 audition weekends and april is one of them. all three rounds of their auditions have been more than full and this one is also."

Okay, thanks. It just seems strange to do it so late when most kids are in the process of making their final decisions as to which school to attend. Do they let the kids know, on the spot, what the decision is? Surely they can't have too many spots left, right?

Susan, congrats to you and your D on her decision. I'm not surprised. :)

alwaysamom,
OCU does always have 3 weekends of auditions..two days each time and the final one has been early April for the past few years. They not only have potential MT majords audition, but because it is a school of music, they have instrumentalists, etc auditioning as well. The school has a stellar reputation in the MT world, so I am sure that they do not have trouble filling their 20-25 spots, but I do know that they will allow those who auditioned previously at OCU who got rejected (I know, harsh word) audition again in the same school year, so that may be part of the reason they have the later audition (I am only speculating here). The MT audition slots were filled some time ago for the last audition dates, so I am not sure those who didn't get accepted to other programs could even get an audition time at this point, but I do know that those auditioning last are not considered for talent scholarships on these last dates. Hope this helps. (and apologies if I got any of the info incorrect).

Lexasmom

Susan,

I am trying to send you a private message but your private message box is full. I am very interested in your opinion on a specific program. Thanks

Rard's mom

Lexasmom, thanks for confirming that they always do this. I just don't remember, I guess. I'm aware of the reputation of OCU for MT and I guess that's probably the reason that I find it so unusual that they'd still be looking for kids this late in the game, so to speak. :)

alwaysamom,
Not a problem. I guess they have to factor in those to whom they offer acceptances who choose to go elsewhere. Once my d was accepted, the music school gave her two weeks to send in a letter of intent to the music school (not to the university itself). I would imagine that those who auditioned in November and then found out they got accepted somewhere else that they would rather attend, might opened up some spots. It seems from the "Happy Acceptance" thread that quite a few had many options this year!

yay:) That's exciting. That is such a prestigious school. Congrats to you and your daughter!

good luck-amy

Rard's mom...I am sorry about the full PM INbox. I have not had a chance to figure out what I want to delete as there are some I wish to save and frankly for me, it's easier to get all mail in my email so it is in one place. So, send me a note at SoozieVT which is at aol.com instead of using the PM function, all right? One thing I must caution you is that I am backlogged about 40 emails right now because of my daughter's car accident and all the time I was away from the computer and my time with her now and the outpouring of support from friends in regular life and from here online. We both have lots of thank you's we want to do. I will try to get back to you but it might not be right away. We have to go back to doctors and see our school musical and then are hoping to head to NYC on Friday if my daughter can make it. Today was her first time out of our house and it was a great first step and we just came from the dress rehearsal of her school musical to which she sadly is no longer in. So, please realize that I will get back to you if you can wait a little, thanks!

The thing is, there are parents on this forum way more experienced than me in the sense that their kids are already IN these programs....we have just done the exploration and visits and auditions, albeit that we learned a lot ;-).

Talk soon, Susan

Susan,

How exciting for your daughter to have chosen NYU! I can remember well over a year ago reading your posts when she was wanting to graduating early and her interest in NYU CAP21. I am sure she is going to be incredibly successful, especially after reading your exciting news about her scholarship. As the mother of a Tisch Strasburg studio student who tells me that there are very, very, very few of the types of scholarships that your daughter was awarded I am so very happy for both you and your daughter (okay, maybe a little jealous, too :)). I have to say, although we pay full tuition for our daughter, it has been worth every penny. She absolutely loves it there. It is such a wonderful feeling as a parent to know your child is in the right program at the right school. That's what I have always loved about your posts to prospective students when you always emphasize the fact that it will all work out and they will end up in the program that is right for them.

I also wanted to tell you how sorry I was to hear of your daughter's accident and how wonderful it has been to read in the various threads that she is recuperating so well. I often think of you and the amazing energy level you must have. I can remember when you were looking for colleges for your other d last year and also trying to keep up with your musical theater d, too. Well, congratulations to both you and your very talented daughter. I hope I will see her one day in a producation at Tisch. Something tells me that is a definite probability.
