Auditions 2016

Really appreciate the 2015 audition thread. So helpful as we navigate the complicated dance process.
Anybody have a child auditioning this year?

We are going to my daughter’s first audition, 11/7th, at Muhlenberg College, PA.

Good luck!

Yes, my D is going through the audition process now. She auditioned for Point Park last week and Sam Houston State in Texas today. She also auditioned for Cal Arts. She plans to audition for University of the Arts and Marymount too.

How was the Point Park audition? My D was supposed to go, but she is injured (YIKES!) and we had to postpone. Also curious if anyone that auditioned for Pace has heard any feedback?

My D so far has done the Point Park audition and will be auditioning at Montclair State and BoCo next month, and SUNY Purchase and Marymount in February. Point Park is a top choice so if she gets in there (will hear by mid Jan) we may be cutting some of the other auditions. My D felt relatively good about the PPU audition (her words “I didn’t suck”, lol). She thought the petit alegro was difficult, they did barre and some center work, no across the floor. There was a very upbeat jazz combo which she really enjoyed and 2 brief modern phrases. She did not do the pointe portion.

My daughter auditioned at the University of Texas today.

@mabel15 What did you daughter say about Texas? My daughter auditioned there end of October and loved it. We are waiting to hear. She has narrowed down to 3 places, including Texas, but waiting for results. I wasn’t able to attend with her, but wondered if mostly modern. She does both ballet and modern.

My daughter is looking for a school that is more jazz focused. She has auditioned multiple places but her ballet is just not strong enough to get her through. She loved PACE because they seem to look for more than just the ballerina types. Any suggestions on schools with a good jazz focus BFA program?

@Huskerf1 i really don’t know about jazz but my daughter auditioned at Arizona and was surprised it was so much jazz, so they may have more concentration there.

Our daughter has completed seven (Modern Dance) auditions now - SMU, Oklahoma, George Mason, Towson, Indiana, Rutgers and Ailey/Fordham. We have only NYU and Dominican left. So far she’s been accepted at all, except Indiana (wait listed) and Ailey/Fordham (too soon to have heard yet). She’s going to have a hard decision. Definitely close between OK, Rutgers and SMU. She fell in love with the OK campus, Dance dept. and Performing Arts Center, and they are showing her a lot of love. Have not visited SMU yet, and Rutgers is definitely strong as well. If anyone has any first-hand experience with any of these programs, we would love to hear it. We dropped Marymount, SUNY Purchase, UArts, VCU and Ohio State, because it was just too many auditions to manage, and once we heard back from a couple, did not feel we needed more to choose from.

@ballet13 sorry just saw this. My D really liked the ballet class-the instructor also teaches at Ballet Austin(D trained there) so she thought it was a good advanced class. She enjoyed the contemporary class although it is not her strongest area. Overall she really like the audition! I have heard the program is more modern focused but we were please to hear that they are adding more tap and broadway. D is also auditioning for MT programs.

@mabel15 Happy New Year! Has your daughter heard back from Texas yet? We are waiting and my daughter has narrowed it down to 2 other schools and waiting to hear Texas outcome.

@ballet13-Happy New Year! No she is still waiting.Wish we would hear soon!

I think it might go into March! Will be very hard waiting. I didn’t attend this audtion with her, her dad took her. He thought they said we would her in December which I think he misunderstood.

@ballet13 I think that I heard them say that we would hear from the dance department before we heard from the university but did not mention a specific time.

This will be a long 2 months if it goes until March 1! She is deciding between a couple, this will just make it a little more confusing. I was hoping if she was accepted at both Texas schools she likes, we could do visits in same trip, then only 1 flight to Texas. It;s like a game with deposits due for housing preferences, etc. It would’ve been nice to least find out if accepted to Texas dance, since if not that, then school would be out. I did think it was simultaneously, since dance admission person did say that most dancers may not have been accepted to Texas if it were not for dance since so academically competitive. @mabel15 are you in state? My one concern for Texas is being from east coast, will you feel isolated since mostly in state students?

@ballet13 Yes we are in state-we live in Austin…
It would be so great to know something. UT is actually the only audition my D has done so far-the rest are MT starting in February. What other Texas school is your D considering?
I think being part of the dance community at UT would keep you from feeling too isolated.

@mabel15 She spent summer at Ballet Austin soph into junior year and loved it. So Texas is very high on list. She was accepted into TCU and Ohio State, and has decided to not pursue any more apps or auditions. She knew this in November, so that helped. TCU is only other school in Texas. I am going to message you. Thx!

We heard today. My D did not get in:( She auditioned in November at her performing arts high school.
