Does anyone know how long the BSU auditions are at Unifieds? We got our time slot, but it just has a starting time. Someone at the office told me each slot was 8 minutes, but that seems awfully short if they are also doing a dance audition…

It’s so hard to schedule all these auditions! Help?

Last year, my daughter had a 20 minute slot blocked out for Ball State (Hers was 10-1020 AM). Then she had a three-hour dance call blocked out for them that same evening (7-10 PM).

For some reason though I’m thinking that Ball State dance call was NOT automatic . . . like they didn’t give everyone a dance call . . . because I remember that my D had to move an appointment with a program director because of the Ball State dance callback. Someone else can chime in here so I don’t give misinformation. (You think that you will remember EVERYTHING from the audition year, but for me, that’s not always been the case. haha!)

P.S. She did NOT take the full 20 minutes we allotted for her audition.

Going along with kksmom-
I had a great experience at the chicago unifieds, I had roughly 10 minutes for my personal audition. I performed my pieces and after my performance they gave me a few tips of feedback. I instantly felt comfortable and at home with the faculty during my audition. Later that evening there was a dance call that I attended from 6pm-8pm and it consisted of some basic ballet routines and an upbeat jazz combination.

All of the universities at the unifieds are booking students in and out, in and out. So, they are pretty familiar with this stressful process. As long as you keep organized with your personal auditions and know where you are supposed to be, you should be golden! :)

Thats funny- my D was wait listed at Ball State after Chicago Unifieds last year, and for the life of me, I can’t remember that she did any evening dance call for them. Either the memories are long gone, or some folks are accepted/wait listed without the dance call.

So back in December we received an e-mail stating that my D’s Ball State audition time would be at 11:40 a.m. Then with the holidays and all the prepping for Unifieds craziness, we didn’t realize that there was no mention of a dance call. Is that just an oversight ?? Now we’re all worried that with the tight schedule we do have at Unifieds we won’t be able to fit a dance call in…anyone out there know the scoop on this type of situation?? Thanks!

momarmarino, we are doing Ball State at NY Unifieds, and we have a morning slot. They told me on the phone that the dance call is given the same day late that afternoon/evening, kind of as a call back. So, if they are interested after they hear the songs/monologues, you will be asked to return later that night for the dance call. We were not given a time, and we are just keeping that evening free in the hopes that my D gets an invitation to the dance call.

Caveat: Taylor11, above, who goes to Ball State, said they only do dance calls in Chicago. It is possible the person I was speaking to on the phone did not realize we were auditioning in NY, or maybe Ball State changed it this year and are doing the dance calls in all locations. I may call and find out…it seems a little strange that they wouldn’t do the dance call in cities other than Chicago, no?

Monkey13: Thanks for the info! We received our audition time through an e-mail and there was no mention of a dance call so I think I will call them Monday to check on that. We already have a different school’s dance audition scheduled at 1:45 p.m. and then a vocal audition for another school from 4:15-5:30 so I sure hope that if my D gets asked to come to dance call that night it doesn’t conflict with the other stuff It’s kind of a nightmare to schedule all this stuff–I think it adds another level of stress for the kids in an already stressful process. I’m thinking it would be much easier if there was a central clearing house of sorts through which all auditions for all schools are booked…

My daughter’s letter from Ball States lists her audition time and also states that there will be a dance call that same day from 5-7pm. She is auditioning in Chicago.

So you got a letter through snail mail? We only received an e-mail stating her audition time. Mind you, my D did not apply until December because she decided to add BSU at the last minute. So maybe that has something to do with it. We’ll call on Monday and see what the scoop is. Thanks again!! Good luck to your D with all her auditions! We’ll be in Chicago too so maybe our paths will cross in the halls of the Palmer House.

Our D is auditioning for Ball State on Monday in Chicago, and although they prefer doing it all on the same day, they were willing to let her attend the dance call on another evening to avoid a conflict we had. So after changing her schedule twice, she’s now attending their dance call on Tuesday evening. They were very nice about working around our conflicts, so don’t hesitate to call them if necessary. I think they had dance calls all three nights, M-W, 5:00-7:00pm. No specific, individual dance auditions were scheduled.

Same info with us. They like you to do the dance call the same day but you don’t have to and it is from 5-7pm. I received this verbally and written.

CORRECT- You do not have to be at the dance call the same day as your audition, however it IS required for your audition for musical theatre. If you are someone who needs these special accomadations you need to email auditions@bsu.edu immediately to notify us that you will dance on a different day.
We have a giant number of prospective students auditioning this year, and it is easier to keep track of everyone if we are notified if you need to be in a different dance call.

Just FYI: You guys were right…there is no dance call at NYC Unifieds. They have 20 minute time slots for the singing/acting/interview. No call backs at NY. Just that 20 minute slot (I called and asked). They assess your dance skills through your training and talking to you about it.

D auditioned on campus for class of 2015, where there was an on-campus full dance call. She was accepted. Friend of hers, class of 2016, auditioned at LA Unifieds. There was no dance call there that year. Friend was also accepted to the BFA. The friend (and anyone else in that situation) did a dance placement at the beginning of the semester her freshman year. D was placed based on her audition. Both kids, very different levels of dancers, were appropriately placed. D later auditioned (November of her freshman year) into the dance minor program, which can be added to a theatre degree or any other degree program at Ball State. That provided placement information for all forms of dance taught there.
