I was talking to a friend and he told me that if you major in Pharmacy and do the 8 years, you automatically get accepted to any medical school. So after the first 4 undergraduate years, you can take the MCAT. If you pass, you go to medical school, if you fail, you can finish 4 years for Pharmacy and if you want, you can get into medical school without taking the MCAT. Is this true? Would you guys ever do this? Me personally, I wouldn't because I wouldn't work for an extra 4 years of Pharmacy if I could just study harder for a test.

First, the MCAT is not a pass/fail test. It's scored 3-45 (though no one ever gets higher than a 42) with the 90th%ile landing usually at 33 or 34.

Second, you're friend is completely off base. Actually getting a PharmD (doctor of Pharmacy degree) requires you to spend a minimum of two years in undergraduate as a pre-pharm student, take the PCAT, apply to pharmacy school, and then complete a 4 year course of study before becoming a real pharmacist. That's 6 years right there minimum, and plenty of people like my fraternity brother I lived with last year actually do 4 years of undergrad, get their bachelor's and then go on to pharmacy school.

Third, it's completely preposterous that having a PharmD results in automatic admission to medical school. While I personally know of two individuals who did go to pharmacy school, only to later decide to do medical school, they certainly had to take the MCAT, fill in any holes in their pre-reqs, and apply like everyone else.

Fourth, since it's not a real scenario, there are no opinions for anyone to hold on whether they would do it or not.

blinks

5.) If anything, the PharmD would hurt, since medical schools would be reluctant to pull a qualified pharmacist away from the national shortage.

6.) I would... I'm so... what?! Any medi... what?

^---laughs at above post.

your postt is kind of confusing. if you want to be a doctor- just get a bachelors degree && just apply for med school....

Ok, thanks for that info. I was a bit skeptical but I thought it was true, haha :o I'll tell my friend this though and tell him he was wrong :D

I'd be kind of amused if you didn't, actually...

But you should.
