Automotive Engineering Master's - Worth it or Not?

Hello,

I am currently a senior in a Mechanical Engineering Program at NJIT. I was looking into getting a Master’s in Automotive Engineering from Clemson University right after finishing my degree at NJIT.

I want an Automotive Engineering degree because cars really interest me and I work on/drive cars as a hobby.

I am just unsure whether or not an Automotive Engineering Degree versus a Mechanical Engineering degree would help me in the automotive field more (assuming they are both master’s). I would absolutely love to work in a performance/motorsport segment of a major car company, such as Mercedes AMG or a LeMans team. If the Automotive degree would significantly aid in getting a position in that field, I would certainly go for my master’s. I believe it would but I would like some confirmation from others more experienced if possible. I also am unsure of whether or not it would be more beneficial to get a job first and work before going to Clemson.

My plan was the following; Apply to Clemson in the Fall/Winter, and if I receive a significant amount of financial aid, attend Clemson. Otherwise I would search for full-time positions and get work experience before attending graduate school.

Also if you know any other schools with Automotive Engineer Master’s programs let me know! All I found was Clemson and Michigan. Definitely let me know if they are closer to NY/NJ.

Thanks!

Have you considered doing a co-op with an automaker?
