Hey everyone out there, would any Rhodes student or parent of a student comment on what the average cost of attending the school is? Cost is a big thing for my parents due to the fact that I am in the Texas Tomorrow Fund which only covers in state public tuition.

Thanks everybody!

You may want to ask Curmudgeon, a dad on CC whose daughter currently attends Rhodes. She is there on a full merit scholarship, so their cost is zero. But I'm sure he could help you.

Jonas, I just saw their estimated Cost of Attendance (COA) and it was $41,000 including $900 of books, a transportation allowance, and $16-1800 in spending money. About 40% of kids get some sort of merit based scholarship, either on academics, leadership, or community service. Rhodes is not a 100% of need school but you might be fortunate and fit in a spot where the aid is really good. I know there are folks getting aid whose families make good money. Have you done any online FA calculators? Are your stats competitive for a merit award? Check out some of the community service based merit scholarships- requirements are much lower than for the pure academic and it will add ON TOP OF ANY NEED AID which is really sweet.

Thanks curmudgeon, my family's is above middle class, but not well-to-do, and my parents have put me and my sis in the Texas Tomorrow Fund, which if you don't know means my college edu. is paid for if I attend a public TX university. Problem is that I have no interest in any of the schools here, with the exception of Baylor, and that's private. So, as you can see financial aid is a big issue, also it doesn't help that my sis graduates hs a year after me.

Well, Jonas . Two in college cuts your EFC in half for those years that both are in college. I'd work the calculators. Also, are you competitive for a merit award? I think the average merit award is well over $10K.

Baylor has (or used to have) a merit calculator on the web. So does Southwestern in Georgetown. Although Baylor's entering class is not quite as accomplished as Rhodes, several kids from D's high school go there and are getting fine ducations at state school prices (after their scholarships). (We are Texans , too.)

Just did the EFC with folks and it said my family was expected to pay 27K, but I was wondering, if my sis is going to graduating right after me, would that cut the EFC in half still...I really hope so :) And yeah hopefully I will be able to receive merit aid, I mean with a 3.7 unweighted, that's good right?

Jonas,
Curmudgeon is THE master of all college related admissions, scholarships, information, etc. Follow his sage advice!

It is my understanding that your parents can write to the Financial Aid personnel and explain that even if both siblings are not in school at exact same time, that financial burden over 8+ years can be substantial. Rhodes is an tremendous place-let the admissions and financial aid personnel get to know your personal story. IMO, there is no substitute for that.
