average day at rice

I'm just curious what students do on a saturday or sunday. Homework? Gym? hang out? I want to go to Rice and love pretty much everything about it but am beginning to question the social life at Rice after visiting some other schools. Im just trying to get a better feel of what it would be like to live ar Rice. any help is appreciated thanks

My typical Saturday and Sunday afternoons have been filled with watching Powderpuff games, going to varsity sport games, going to the museum, watching movies in the commons while doing homework, jumping on the trampoline, going on bike rides, day trips to Galveston beach, among other things. Nearly all of these activities are done with friends.

Saturday nights are usually parties; Sunday nights are usually homework.

There’s plenty to do at Rice, and you will almost always be able to find someone to do something with.

I have honestly never found myself bored over the weekend at Rice.

On normal weekends, you can always find parties on both Friday night and Saturday night. Typically, the big public parties are held on Saturday nights and Friday nights are more private, chill parties among specific friends groups, but there are always exceptions to this.

I usually sleep in on Saturday mornings but some people wake up a little earlier to go running, get a head start on some homework, whatever. Saturday afternoons I go out with my friends…shopping, watching sports games, playing powderpuff, running errands together, buying costumes for public parties, exploring downtown, whatever. If it’s a chill weekend and we have time, we might see a movie or something. Saturday nights are usually on the more wild side unless it’s finals weekend.

Sundays are super super chill. Usually my friends and I do our homework together. If it’s nice outside (which it basically is from October-March), we’ll walk to Rice Village together and get frozen yogurt or something to take a study break. Maybe this is just me but I tend to not get much homework done til Sunday night, when I freak out about how much I have to do, and then really crack down.

Also with regard to social life, keep in mind we have Fall Recess and Spring Recess. These are four-day weekends in the middle of fall and spring term respectively. They’re great for getting in a car with your friends and just going wherever–I went to Dallas over Spring Recess–or just relaxing at Rice and getting to know people you don’t usually hang out with.

I think there’s pretty much something for everyone here. If you want to be a crazy partier, or if you want to play Scrabble on Saturday nights, or anything in between–you will find others here who are into the same thing.

DS spends quite a few weekends on the road with his club sport. He really likes the new rec center, and I think he spends some weekend time there. He is off-campus, but likes to hangout at his res college, and he seems to have a very balanced mix of play and study. Both my kids love/loved their time at Rice and are very social creatures -the problem was/is “too many choices of interesting and fun things to do” rather than, “not enough choices of fun and interesting things to do”.

most students sit in the commons and stare at the ceiling and the flying cockroaches and sometimes they drool

^^hahaha^^

thanks for the laugh…

also sometimes students get bb guns and unleash their frustration on unsuspecting rice students. in that case, rice expels you.
