Hey all,

I'm finishing up my first semester and am wondering what the average gpa at middlebury has been in recent years to get a sense of how I am doing. I've googled it but only found figures up to 2006. Any info?

Thanks

Hey all,

I'm finishing up my first semester and am wondering what the average gpa at middlebury has been in recent years to get a sense of how I am doing. I've googled it but only found figures up to 2006. Any info?

Thanks

The Princeton Review said the average gpa was a 4.0 unweighted.
I’ve just been accepted ED this year, and I have a 3.9 unweighted, if that helps :)

yeah i read stuff like that too, 3.9-4.0 UW.
i got in with around a 3.6 though.

I think he’s asking about the average GPA of current Midd students, not applicants.

yea im finishing up my first semester AT midd. Just curious

at the risk of revealing my age, when I graduated you needed a 3.1 to graduate cum laude. Now, it seems that a 3.1 would be a BAD GPA.

to update, the average of all of my friends was around a 3.4. I’m not sure if that’s skewed to the right or left from the actual, but it seems pretty good. Also, gives me a nice pat on the back for my 3.9 :)

My kid got the first C of his life at Midd during his first semester. He was pretty freaked. As his parents, we felt his grades were pretty good amid a lot of transition. Now at the end of first semester junior year, I think his overall GPA is around a 3.8 or close to it. Keep up the good work, Dawoo. Hope the rest of your first semester was as successful as your grades. I know S works incredibly hard, but also has learned he HAS to make time for fun because otherwise one can get completely locked down with the amt of work at Midd.

Urban, I will agree that grades have probably gone up since you were in college. But I am a little unconvinced that it’s purely grade inflation because if you look at the stats of entering classes, those have gone up considerably as well. BUT… I can honestly say that what kids achieve in HS now as a matter of course, was met by only the rarest of birds when I was in HS.

Good to hear from you Moda. Haven’t seen you in a while. I’m not claiming that it’s necessarily inflation (God knows my stats would never gain admission at Midd today). But stats have gone up EVERYWHERE. My high school class valedictorian got a 1350 on her SATs and was admitted to Harvard ED. Clearly, part of that is the fact that they’ve changed the scale for the SATs, but it also has to do with the level of competition (more kids applying). It’s important to remember that there’s obviously been an active change by the administration to deal with this “adjustment” in grades. As I stated, “in my day” a 3.1 was good enough for cum laude, a 3.8 would have given you Summa cum Laude and probably Phi Beta Kappa. I imagine that’s no longer the case.

Thanks moda. It definitely was tricky balancing my schedule to allow for other activities, because homework can be such a black hole at times. But overall I think i did a pretty good job of getting out of my room! I’m in MOQA, playing 2 intramural sports and volunteering at the humane society. Could do more stuff, but the balance works for me haha

In the spirit of honesty, I am here to update. Today I noted S’s overall GPA is actually “only” a 3.6. Which just shows you what an early C+ and a B or two can do to a GPA. Still… I am seriously proud of his grades but more importantly is his effort and level of engagement. It’s a ton of money and he is definitely holding his end of the bargain in doing well. Sidenote: I also noted that if you look at a generic gpa calculator online an A- is worth 3.7, but at midd an A- is only 3.67. Interesting and adds up.

In any event, I did text son to say that if he kept his current GPA or better he would at least earn Magna Cum Laude honors at graduation, so thanks Urban! Who knew?? :)

Congrats to Sonnydunn!
