Could you guys know the average GPA of undergraduate students in JHU? It is said that there is grade deflation in JHU. If it is true, it will hurt students who plan to apply for medical school.
there is no grade deflation like Caltech, but there is no grade inflation. Average GPA at Hopkins is a 3.33. I suspect it might be a 3.4 now even.
You need about a 3.5 to get into med school, which is more than doable at Hopkins.
what do you mean you need a 3.5 to gget into medical school
You don’t need a 3.5. But the average GPA for med school applicants is 3.55 as of 2014, and has been around 3.5 since 2003. And that for matriculants is 3.6-3.7. Plus, you’ll probably do better on the MCAT if you’ve gotten good grades in your pre-reqs. So unless you have really outstanding extracurriculars, for a traditional student, a GPA below 3.5 will be a big hindrance, particularly to more selective med schools.
I imagine there’s a balance. I would like to think a 3.5 at JHU means something different than a 3.5 at a local community college – not that there’s anything wrong with a community college. But presumably “academic rigor” is a factor, too?
