I was looking at the student profile page on UCBs admissions website: http://admissions.berkeley.edu/studentprofile and it says that the average GPA is 4.42 weighted. However, in the UC admissions website: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/campuses/berkeley/freshman-profile/index.html It says that the middle 50% of GPA is between 4.12 and 4.3. Why is there a difference in the averages? which one is right?
UCB uses Fully weighted (unlimited honors points for advanced classes) which is the 4.42 GPA and also the UC capped weighted (8 semesters of honors points) which is the 4.12-4.3 range listed on the UC Freshman Profile.
They will also look at your Unweighted UC GPA. Both are right.
How can out of state applicants compete with the 4.42 when their Honors courses aren’t counted as honors? Also is the GPA on the website from freshman to junior year or just sophomore and junior year?
GPA is based on 10-11th grades. AP/IB and DE courses for OOS are counted for those Honors points. My son’s HS (CA residents) only had 3 UC approved Honors classes that could use for the Honors points: Honors Pre-Calc/Honors Chem and Honors Physics. Yes, there is a slight advantage for in-state applicants with these Honors classes, but the UC’s do consider HS course rigor in the context of your HS.
How can they consider course rigor if they only look at what you self reported on the application, and only request your high school transcript after admission? Why do they ask u to self report your 9th grade classes if they dont count them in the GPA? Sorry if I’m asking a lot of questions, the UC application is really confusing me
UC’s ask for 9th grades since there are minimum UC a-g course requirements that have to be met to apply which includes a-g courses taken in 9th grade.
You enter in the name of your HS on the application, so it is easy for them to figure out what type of HS courses are offered at your school and if they are considered rigorous as an OOS applicant.
