Average # of subjects students take at your school?

Hi, so after doing some research here, [correct me if I'm wrong] I realized that most American students take around 5-6 subjects. So how many do you take per year? In 9th grade we each took 13 subjects and in 10-11 you have to take 8 (minimum) or 9 (maximum) out of a choice of about 15+ at my school (I don't know exact number). At my school three of those 9 are compulsory i.e. Mathematics, English Language and English Literature. Also, you are required to take a regional exam (Caribbean) in each subject you take. There are in actuallity about 35 different subjects which can be sit. You can also take some outside of school if you so desire. So how many subjects do you/or your classmates take on average?

State the country you're from if not from America.

A year? This year I have 8:
Calculus (AP), Chemistry (AP), Physics(AP), Psychology(AP), Engrish, Spanish, Art, Religion

A year?

Varies; at my school you can take a wide variety of amounts of classes. Most people take 7 classes a semester, with about half of those taking up second semester. Therefore, I’d say the average is about 10 classes a year.

However, some people take 1-2 zero hours a year, while others have a study hall or senior incentive. Even further, people will do dual enrollment with the local community college or have a work-study program that has them going at 4 classes a year.

So yeah, I can’t really tell you an average, but 10 would be my best guess.

Must be nice to be able to switch classes per semester. We have the same classes straight throughout the year, all three terms (i.e. Christmas Term, Easter Term, Summer Term).

At my school, students usually take 6 subjects (not including P.E/varsity sports).
We can take up to 8 classes, and 1 of them is a mandatory study hall, while the last is a free period.

Next year, I am taking 6 classes in school, Korean at CC, and studying for AP Japanese. :)

7 classes. Everyone has to take 7 except seniors, who can take 5 or 6 periods and do work study/leave for whatever. Or if you’re double-enrolled you can leave for that.

Everyone at my school takes seven credits, no more, no less. CP geometry, algebra 1, and algebra 1, part 1 all have a math lab and gym that swap off every other day so they have eight subjects at a time. Other than that, everyone has seven classes at a time.

We’re only allowed to take 6 classes a year, including an art. 5 “academic” classes maximum. Ugh.

At my first school, you could take a maximum of eight, but, because it was 4x4 block, an AP class took two spaces. Basically, you could take 4 AP Classes and nothing else.

At the school I am at now, you can take 7 classes, and are required to take a study hall. I am taking 5 classes in school (2 AP), and 3 online (All AP)

At my school, we have 7 periods per day. So that means you can take 7 classes per day. However, you can get away with 5 without dual enrollment if you take an AP Science, which is a double block, and a study hall.

We have 8 blocks, and we can basically do whatever. Most seniors fill 5-6 of these blocks. Freshmen mostly take 6.5 because of a required art class, but I’m taking 7.5 :)

8 subjects, on a 4x4 block schedule. not allowed free periods ):

Underclassmen take core subjects: Science, English, Math, Social Studies four periods or so a week, and in addition have subjects of their choice: Music, Art, German, Spanish, Japanese, Food Studies etc. PE, health and religious education is compulsory, but the classes are taken only once a week.
Upperclassmen take 5 or 6 subjects :)

Same, but we can be allowed free periods if we’ve met graduation requirements

I would love to know what those 13 subjects are and what your daily schedule looks like that you can fit them in…

In my school, we have a limit of 8 class periods, but some of them don’t count because of classes like gym (once a cycle, not a full block), health (twice a cycle, not a full block), and science labs (once a cycle, not a full block, sometimes in the same block as gym/health/frees/whatever). It’s sort of complicated because we have a double rotating block schedule (morning and afternoon rotations) so we drop two classes a day. Anyway, back to your question. Because of gym and health, etc. the most classes you can take is 6 or 7, depending on upper or underclassmen. Each year most people take an English, history, science, math, language, and elective. However, since we’re only required to take 3 years of math and science, a bunch of seniors choose not to take math or science or either, and take extra electives instead. This year I chose not to take a science, so I have English, history, math, Latin, orchestra (my elective all four years), and philosophy (my elective in place of science).

7 classes a day. just about every other school around Memphis is on a 4x4 block scheduling or trimester, and my school’s thinking of doing that too.

^I detest the 4x4 schedule. In my school, it doesn’t allow a student to graduate early.

Well back in 9th grade the 13 subjects we did were:

History
Mathematics
English Language
English Literature
Physical Education
French/T.D. (Technical Drawing)
Spanish
Geography
Information Technology
Art
Christian Living (Basically Religious Education)
Physical Development
Integrated Science (They broke it down into Physics-1st Term, Bio-2nd Term, Chem-3rd Term, so we knew what subjects we wanted to take in 10th grade)

All of these are compulsory, except for the choice between French/T.D.

We had either a session of 35 min to 70 min for each subject except on Fridays we had four 35 minute sessions of French so that would be 140 minutes.

Sorry, I don’t remember how much per day but it was basically from 8:00-1:50 or 9:10-3:00 depending on what “shift” you are on but if you took French sometimes you would have classes from 8:00-3:00. Now, in 10th grade, if you are on the 2nd “shift” you basically have classes from 8:00-3:00 everyday depending on the number of subjects you do.

Oh and all were graded subjects except for Personal Development.

I go to a private school, so some things are weird… but the majority of public schools here require students to take 8 courses a year which mean 4 a day.

My school, however, is on the traditional system. We have seven classes a day. Students are required to have a minimum of five academic courses per year, but most end up with 6 academics freshman year+ 1 art class, and then go between 5 and 7 academic classes each year after that. Most take at least 6 classes a year until senior year. Senior year, a lot of people only take five. I personally took 7 freshman year (5 academic, 2 band… one after school), 9 sophomore year (7 academic+2 afterschool band courses), 8 classes junior year (6 academic, 2 band… one before school), 7 senior year (5 academic+2 band… one before school).

I’ve only had the priviledge of a study hall freshman year and senior year.

At my school, graduation requires: English 4, Math 3, History 3, Science Lab 3, Foreign Language 2, Art 1, Athletics Team 4… and passing all senior courses. lol But most do wayyy more. I was pretty much able to graduate after 10th grade minus two history credits and two English credits… but I then went on to take a lot more classes.

At my school, our schedule is a little weird. We have a block schedule which means one subject lasts a semester and you have 4 subjects per semester. This adds up to a maximum of 8 subjects a year. However, certain subjects take the whole year to cover and thus take up 2 subject slots. These certain subjects include all APs so starting from junior year (the year our school allows us to take AP classes), it is possible only to have 4 subjects in a year. I kind of wish we had a different schedule. I feel kind of inferior to CC members who have taken a bazillion APs.
