I am applying for a public policy/human services intern position, full time during the summer and part time during the academic year (Philadelphia, PA). They ask for salary requirements... How much on average does one get paid for this type of internship?

I’ve interned in policy on a state level with zero compensation, and I’ve run into the same agreement on a federal level. I congratulate you if you’ve found one with compensation, and with that I would suggest minimum wage. There are A LOT of policy/polisci/law/etc students aiming for policy intern positions that will work for free to have the experience. All in all, I will tell you now that there are many great opportunities in this field, but don’t expect much compensation as an intern-- giving interns experience isn’t the only benefit that they are looking for ;)

Try to avoid putting in any salary requirements - a good fallback is to say your salary is negotiable. If they press you, give a range, but don’t sell yourself short, even if it is a competitive position (which is surely is, if it’s paid in Philly).
