Average tuition paid

Would anyone like to share the tuition they actually paid after scholarships?

What other people paid won’t do you much good. Have you run Yale’s Net Price Calculator?

I don’t think this will help you in any way because there is such a huge difference in the cost of a private vs public school. In addition, financial aid awards vary greatly.

Plus it is all based on the need your family has. It would not help you to know that I paid $1k and Joe paid $70k because you’d need to know what my income/assets were and what Joe’s were, and then how we compare to your family.

Okay, I’ll play along. However, what every poster above has said is true. What we paid Yale years ago is NOT going to be the same as someone would pay Yale today who was in the exact same situation. But, FWIW, here goes:

My son graduated Yale in 2015. During three of my son’s years at Yale, his sister was attending Harvard. So, both HY considered we had two kids concurrently enrolled in school for those three years. Although our income fluctuated every year, it ranged between $150K and $170K. We lived in NYC and rented a 3-bedroom apartment (paying more than double what most people living in the rest of the country do in mortgages, so I’m sure that went into the calculation as well). We do not have any other children.

During the three years my kids overlapped in college, we paid Harvard about $19K per year and Yale about $17K per year – yes, Yale cost us less than Harvard! Regardless, the total we paid for each child was LESS than the cost of tuition, room and board at our flagship state school. During the one year my kids did not overlap, we paid Yale about $36K (or about the same as when both our kids had been attending college at the same time).

As others have said, please run the net-price calculator to see how your financial situation impacts your child’s FA!

One good thing I can say is that whatever the amount, you can spread it out over 10 payments. Now how large an amount that may be each month can vary widely like posters have already noted. Paying for Yale for those of us too “rich” for our kids to get major money, but too “poor” to pay full freight, is a sacrifice. I can say that what I paid for Yale was about the same as other private schools full tuition - so I fully believe her Yale education was a good decision.
