Average undergraduate GPA for engineering

Does anyone know the average undergraduate GPA for each engineering major in Cal Poly? What about lower division vs upper division?

Thanks!

I hear engineering majors usually have around a 2.8 gpa but that needs to be confirmed

I have heard that if you graduate from CAL POLY Engineering with a GPA of 3.0 or better you have done quite well. Just what I have heard. I dont have any facts to back that up, but Engineering is tough at CAL POLY.

Having a 3.0 or above in Cal Poly Engineering means you are doing pretty good at school already.

If you get a 3.5 or above, you are doing REALLY REALLY well and will be eligible for Tau Beta Pi, an engineering honors society.

I think HS students are so used to the idea of getting 4.0 GPA. In CP and for that matter, any rigorous universities, there is usually 1 person in the entire university (of 18000 students in CP’s case) that gets a perfect 4.0 upon graduation.

to put this in perspective, have a look at this website:

[National Trends in Grade Inflation, American Colleges and Universities](http://www.gradeinflation.com)

Engineering students across the country have a GPA about .3 below Arts/Humanities, .2 below social sciences, and .1 below math/science.

When you write your gpa on a resume, would you write your cal poly gpa, your major gpa, your cumulative gpa, or whichever one is higher? If it is cumulative, couldn’t you just take a lot of random ge classes to boost your gpa?

You won’t have time to take a lot of random GE classes :)

I think most students report their overall cumulative GPA.

FYI – I was told by my son that the average Engineering GPA of a freshman is about 2.5 and 2.8 for more senior students. This of course is anecdotal, but sounds reasonable to me. In other information, I actually contacted the department of this so it is confirmed:

For the Engineering College:
(1) 3.85 GPA is Suma Cum Laude
(2) 3.7 GPA is Magna Cum Laude; and
(3) 3.5 GPA is Cum Laude

OsakaDad, do you know why the engineering GPA for freshman is less than the average engineering GPA for seniors? I always assumed that the classes get more difficult each year.

Thank you for answering back, everyone, :).

Question0: I’m not OsakaDad, but my CP Engineering student had his lowest grades in his first two years. I can think of two reasons for this:

 1. The step up in challenge level from high school for engineers is HUGE!!! It took some time for my son’s work habits to rise to the level required for success in CP Engineering.
 2. Some of the most challenging classes for engineers (but not always the most interesting) are the math and science support classes. These are all taken in the first two years. By third and fourth year, most of your classes are your major classes (typically these are interesting and enjoyable) and GE’s (these are easier).

For most engineering majors at Cal Poly, the 3rd-3.5th yr (300 level classes) engineering classes are the hardest. Those are your required core major classes that everyone in your major has to take. Many of the 200 and 300 level classes are still designed to be weed-out classes. So naturally, a good number of engineering students get weeded out.

By the time you get to your 400 level classes (that means you survived, congrats!) those are your engineering major elective classes. So presumably, you will like them because you chose them and thus you perform better.

Engineering majors, as well as Architecture and Sciences, at Cal Poly is Definitely not for slackers, or professional party goers. I have 3 roommates either kicked out of school or changed majors due to poor academic performances.
