AVID - Will it help or hinder to get into UCSD

Hi - My granddaughter is about to enter HS. There is an organization called AVID that is asking her to join. Supposedly, this organization will help her to plan her HS curriculum and offer her support to help her get into UCSD. AVID is a Federal program targeting kids from families that are first generation college bound. Their population is about 50% Latino. They accept students who have passing grades but high GPA is not required.

My granddaughter is receiving all A's in Middle School and is very motivated to go to UCSD. Last summer we visited three universities just to look around and she is barely 13. She would not be considered part of an underprivileged or underrepresented group. How she qualifies for their program . . . . I don't know. But she is a little shy and lacks some confedence. Her mother thinks that she could benefit from the AVID support. My concern is that a university admissions may judge her as less than an outstanding student because of her affilliation with AVID.

Any thoughts on this? Anyone know anything about AVID? Really appreciate your time.
Thanks
Terry

Hey! Is there a spellchecker on this site? :)

Well, I can’t say for certain, but I highly doubt AVID could hurt at all. I think it would be great for her. I’ve spoken to two middle school AVID classes and I could see how interested and ahead of the curve thinking about college they were. Also, taking the right classes in high school can really help her prepare for UCSD. They didn’t have classes like AVID when I was in middle school so I didn’t have as much direction in picking my high school classes at first. I think AVID is great and I’m happy that young kids out there that are so interested in their future.

Any program that puts your granddaughter with adults that can help and support her goal to go to UCSD is a good thing.
Your granddaughter will get the help she needs to plan her hs classes, her SAT testing, help with college applications as well as connecting her with kids with the same goals.
You are mistaken to think affiliation with programs like AVID is a minus when in fact it a boost when it comes to her transcript.
You should enthusiastically support your granddaughter in achieving her dreams and accept the help from AVID.
She should take full advantage of the program because they want ambitious, goal oriented students like her.
