Avon Old Farms School

I noticed that Avon Old Farms and many other single sex schools arent talked much on this forum i just thought i would make a thread for students to talk about the schools.
Here are some quick facts

Location: Avon CT

Founded 1927

all boys school

amazing sports programs

the school has a comradery that you will only find in a all boys school

great college matriculation to top schools!

“Collegiate Baseball” proclaimed that 3 of the 8 top high school baseball players in CT this year attend AOF. Strong.

They are also very well known for their hockey - Several runs deep into the New England Prep School Championships…and many championship titles as well…

4/16/2010
Result: 0-0 Tie (8)

Salisbury traveled to Avon Old Farms and came home with a rare 0-0 tie. Avon boasts one of the strongest teams in New England every year and this year, with 10 seniors on the roster, Avon looks to continue their strong program. The Crimson Knights were ready to play today and had many chances to beat the boys school rival. Overall, pitching and defense were the keys to Salisbury’s success today.

On the mound, James Lynch '11 threw the finest game of his Salisbury career. Lynch went six strong and allowed just one hit while striking out six. Brian Eggleston '10 came on in the seventh and did quite well striking out two in his two innings of work and like Lynch, only allowed one hit. The defense was just as great today. On a day with overcast weather and rain showers on and off you would expect to see many errors from players struggling to find a grip on the ball. However, it was just the opposite. Defensive highlights include a diving play at third base from Alex Tuccio '12. Tuccio laid out for a well hit ball and got up to throw the Avon hitter out at first. Also, Jordano Rodriguez '11 made a great play on a tough and hard hit one hopper at second.

Offensively, Salisbury created opportunities, but were not able to capitalize. The Avon pitching staff, much like Salisbury, had stong pitching performances and they seemed to get better when backed into a corner. The Crimson Knights loaded the bases in the fifth inning after Alec Morrison '13 reached on an error, an Aaron Rodriguez '13 walk and Mike White '11 was hit by a 2-1 pitch. However, the Knights were not able to capitalize as we failed to get the ball out of the infield. In the sixth, Salisbury again had the bases loaded after three Knight hitters were walked, but Avon brought in a tough left handed pitcher who struck out two hitters to get out of the jam.

The game was called after eight innings due to darkness resulting in the first Salisbury tie of the season. It was an exciting and at times disappointing game for the Knights as we know there were chances for us to earn the win.

is clearly the second best all-boys school in Connecticut ;O)

Wow! Fun is fun is back!!!

My nephew is going to Avon Old Farms, so I will be paying attention to this thread in the coming year!
BTW, what a cool campus.

Great school! I have one S already there, finishing his first year as a sophomore and my second S will start in the fall as a freshman.

The campus is very beautiful. The sports are amazing. The academics are challenging and varied for a relatively small student body. The arts department is wonderful! The sophomore is finishing photography this year and loved it, while the soon to be freshman is desperate to take both of the architecture classes they offer.

The thing you have to remember and this applies to every BS- it’s still high school and I believe by definition high school sucks! Just because you are in a wonderful setting, with wonderful teachers and super smart/gifted kids it’s still a bunch of teenagers being teens.

Obviously I love Avon since I will have 2 boys there next fall but we have had our ups and downs over the year. Most of them have been centered around homesick issues and us missing him issues. The school issues have been handled quickly and competently so far and have ended up being minor problems as a result.

In the end I would definitely recommend Avon.

Prepforprep-
Hmmm… no I don’t know anything about that. I do believe a couple of boys were expelled early this year, not sure of the details. My S tends to steer clear of stuff like that. As to the chewing tobacco, I personally have never seen it and he has never mentioned it. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. I’ve only been on campus myself 3-4 times as we live quite far away.
If those things concern you and you are close enough go and visit. If you aren’t close call and ask a ton of questions, not just in admissions, ask teachers and stuff.
Good luck.

My son was just admitted for freshman year, starting in Fall 2012. We visited the school during the Fall '11 open house, met with admissions, learning center and talked with a handful of students. We found it to be a fit for our bright, energetic son who needs the Learning Center support because he is dyslexic. It feels like he will have a full high school experience in a supportive and nurturing environment where he will be challenged and have opportunities to develop his interests in sports and the arts. I would appreciate learning more about anyone’s experience with the school.

Hello akm4,

My son was also recently admitted. He is also dyslexic. We were unable to attend the revisit and have not spoken with anyone from the learning center yet. i would appreciate any feedback you can provide.

thanks!

Hi guys I’m applying to Avon Old Farms and wanted to know my chances of getting it. I’m on a swim team, play piano, study Mandarin Chinese as a second language, and am part of a Church Youth Group for extracurriculars. I have straight A’s and all honor classes, my teachers will most likely give me stellar recommendations, and my interview was fantastic, they said I was “Exactly what they’re looking for”. The only negative thing is probably my SSAT scores which I haven’t received yet but that I think I did pretty bad on. The last section I pretty much bombed. The other sections I think I did pretty good on though. Please chance me as soon as possible, or if you have any advice please tell me that as possible.

@chemistry919: I would be very surprised if you weren’t admitted at AOF with your situation. You also seem like a great match for this school. I attend AOF, and it has a supportive yet challenging environment that has exactly what I was looking for. Did you go on a visit?

I’m a girl so I have no intention of applying/visitng Avon, but out of curiosity…

1.) Does anyone know what it’s like to be a gay boy there?
2.) Are the guys “gentlemen” around the girls (during weekends)?
3.) Is there a macho stigma that boys feel the need to follow?

 1. If you are gay, no one would shame you. (Just don't be super absurd about it, don't just go "Hey I'm gay! Look at me!") Bullies get bullied here.
 2. Not really. It's 21st Century.
 3. A lot of people work out here. Very athletic school. No one would tell you to go workout, but you'd often hear guys across the hall talking about going to workout together. It'd make you feel like a lazy ass, and motivates you to hit the gym.
