Awards for High Schoolers?

Hi all! I'm looking for state or national awards that I can apply for (not scholarships) to boost my resume a tad.
Please don't tell me that I shouldn't be searching out things to boost my resume- I'd just like some help. I live in California and I'm a junior. I'm interested in writing and science, and I need things that I can apply for this year. (AKA not the Siemens competition or Intel science competition)- thanks so much, everyone!

Well, I hate to do the exact thing you told me not to do, but don’t search out things to boost your resume. If you’re not already on track to win a meaningful award by April of your junior year, you’re probably not going to win it.

Do you have any skills? Do you do any activities? I can’t really tell you anything since you haven’t told us anything, but winning an award at something you’re already doing is probably your best bet.

Well, its kind of late to win major awards (many state awards are tougher in California too) when you have started early (i.e. freshman year or before for many!).

Try essay contests, especially local ones. You might not get a prestigious award, but you could win some decent scholarship money.
