hey, which awards did you guys list in the app? i'm trying to get an idea of what to strive for.. currently my list is BLANK.

err, ur list better not be blank. Mine was filled to the max. and I also included other awards in the additional information page.

haha i'm a junior so it is blank rightnow... which awards did you write in??

I don't really want to say because I am paranoid like that.

but I put some national awards, one state and the rest of regional, city, and school level.

Well, you can't count on getting all your awards in junior year...it's almost over. And next year won't help too much either.
But if you're really desperate, maybe you'll get an AP Scholar award or maybe you get honor roll awards at school that you can mention on your application. If you're in NHS, I'm sure you got some sort of award for that.

You should strive for the awards that highlight your passion for a particular area. Definitely try to get some national level awards if you can. Good Luck!

Um, you should do things and just be good at and passionate about them. You shouldn't strive for awards. Admissions isn't a formula where you get 10 points for national awards, 7 points for state awards, 5 points for regional awards, etc.

Obviously not, but a lot of other people have national or state awards in areas of their passion, then they'll be looked more favorably upon then someone with no awards, let alone national awards.

College-- I agree, but awards tangibly fortify your passion for an area as Sadface said. National Awards definitely stand our though.

what 'national awards' are you guys talking about..

Examples:

If your into science: ISEF, Siemens, STS, Davidson's Fellows, Science Olympiad Nationals, Bio Olympiad, Chem Olympiad, Physics Olympiad

Into Math: AIME, USAMO, and many others

Into Writing: Scholastic Awards

Community Service: Congressional Gold Award, Prudential Awards

These are just few examples of the numerous out there for all fields.

Journalism: NSPA, Columbia Press Award

Chemistry: ACS, Science Olympiad

English: Publication in national journal

do.. people really get several of those awards?like the intel and siemens and olympiads... :/ now i'm nervous. well i think i qualified for AIME so that's a start. is there any 'prestigious' ones that i can try for? i'm a jr.. and i'm talking about legit awards, not generic ones like AP scholar or honor roll etc.

see above...

i'm talking about achievable.. i doubt that you got an intel, usamo, or siemanns awards, but if you did, excuse me.

^It is definetly attainable. I got two out the three lol. And if I can do it I'm sure you can do it too.

i'm interested in politics and history, what other awards are there. Currently, for me it's blank aside from some school honor roll BS.

Thanks,
Charlie

i meant attainable as in... like deadline wise not "oh i cant ever win this award" lol
and which 2 did you win??

You definitely don't need these name-brand awards to get into Columbia. Off the top of my head, I can't think of anybody I knew from Columbia who received one of the awards named in this thread or another name-brand award. It's like hooking up w/ a Playmate: good for you if you can pull it off, but it's no big deal if you don't.

By time of app: Community Service Award, national language tests (gold x 3), various school awards, TeenInk publication
