Awareness of Cornell being "Ivey"

I doubt the average person knows or cares what schools are in the Ivy League. It's just not relevant to them. They've probably heard of Harvard, Yale and Princeton and that's about it. So what, though? The people who matter know what the top schools are. Who cares about impressing the man on the street?

Dartmouth and Cornell are probably the most unheard of ivies: here's my ranking of popularity of name amongst the ivies:

Harvard Princeton Yale
Upenn
Columbia
Brown
Cornell
Dartmouth

"Dartmouth and Cornell are probably the most unheard of ivies"

funny...

Upenn i would put lower on your list, "you'llsee"

Just because a large majority of people get it confused with penn state.

My guidance counselor the other day said, "You know that Penn is a hard school to get into right? It is just as hard as an Ivy league school. There are a lot of quasi-Ivies, and I would definitely count Penn as one of them."

Eh, Cornell and Brown seem like the middle class Ivies. Where you can get in if you make good grades and test well and played a sport. HYPC all seem a little...hoity toity rich kid. UPenn no one knows or cares about outside of Wharton.

"Cornell's sheer size may give it a bit of an edge when it comes to that whole national recognition thing."

"from my little corner of the world, Cornell is much better known that Dartmouth, Columbia or Brown; probably due to its size..."

I might add a nuance to these comments. National recognition has something to do with the size of the entire student body, both undergraduate and graduate. Cornell's student body is IDENTICAL in size with half of its ivy peers (Columbia, Penn and Harvard--all fluctuate around 20,000). This is in spite of the fact that Cornell's undergraduate program is larger, which goes on to show Cornell's focus on undergrad education.

Don't feel bad. I'm guessing the number of people on the east coast that could name the entire pac 10 conference is small two. Some might be able to name four: Stanford, Berkeley, UCLA, USC. But then you start on the rest and everyone's a little bleary.

i wouldnt be able to name the entire pac 10... sob
