Awkward choice: retake SAT (for essay) despite high score on first try?

My son scored very high on his first try (same score as his only practice test), but he didn’t take the optional essay. A few days ago, he visited a college (and fell in love with it) and naturally they require the essay. So, he has to take the test again.

I’m concerned how it looks to test a second time when your first score is already in the top 1%. If I were an admissions person, I would think it looks greedy (or obsessive?) to test a second time after a near-perfect score.

Will admission folk understand that it is because he needed to take the essay? Is there any way of communicating that on an application? Is it appropriate to email or call Admissions and ask?

He’s an extremely humble young man and I’d hate for him to be judged as being test obsessive (or however that’s described). Thanks.

Fortunately, you are not an admissions person. It’s fine.

Yes.

I’m not a big fan of the applicant communicating extenuating circumstances (particularly if extenuating requires air quotes), as I think they come off as whiny and making excuses. (When it should be communicated, I think the GC should do it). Your son’s rationale for taking it again is valid (and obvious). No explanation is necessary. Good luck to him
