Awkward Situation with Transitioning to the Dorm Life

I'm going to be a freshman this upcoming fall and I'm a bit nervous about living in the dorms and having a roommate. I'm a guy that prefers hanging around and sleeping in my underwear, but I don't think I'll be comfortable doing that around other people. I've been trying to change my habits and wear a t-shirt and shorts at home, but I never really feel comfortable and it's really hard for me to sleep at night. What makes me even more self-conscious is that I wear embarrassing tighty whities or cartoon print briefs as my underwear of choice. I don't wanna be seen as weird, so I don't know what I should do.

Well first things first, breathe and relax. I can’t relate to “hanging around” in my underwear, but sleeping is something I can comment. The first social obstacle is your roommate, right? It’s probably ideal to transition this slowly. One of the first conversations with a roommate is habits. Talk about it, and see if there’s some sort of compromise. Maybe he doesn’t mind you in the room in your undies. Maybe your roommate is okay with you sleeping in it, but prefers you in at least shorts when it’s daytime.

I copied my local sorority gals, and wear an XL T-shirt that reaches mid thigh to knee. It helps with feeling “at home” when I chill at my dorm.

Maybe try wearing loose sweatpants or pajama pants that won’t feel tight or constricting?

Yes, try just pj pants with no shirt.

Time to change your habits…if you think you might not be comfortable around other people, think about how uncomfortable your roommates or visitors will be. I would not even bring up the subject…just use the rest of the summer to get used to athletic shorts or pj pants…then see what others are wearing and adjust accordingly. This is all part of living with others…your comfort does not always come first…compromise

DD attends Davis and lived in the dorms-Wall Hall. When I was there, I saw male students running around in boxer shorts. The tighties are not going to work or, you will have to cover up. DD asked for a single or double so they stuck her in a triple. Assume they’ll do that to you too because they are short on housing. That’s why you are only guaranteed freshman housing. Change the undies!

May I suggest an upgrade to boxer briefs?

Honestly, walking around in your boxer briefs or boxers isn’t bad. Tighty whities…eh. My last roommate would come out of the shower naked and frequently changed in the room. We would sleep in our underwear all the time. If either one of us were uncomfortable, we would put on more clothes.

You and your roommate can discuss what you guys are comfortable with in terms of clothing…or lack there of.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. Changing my underwear preference to boxer briefs sounds like a good compromise for now (ruled out boxer shorts because they are pretty much like the shorts I’ve been trying to wear, and I still can’t adjust to the looseness). It’s a shame something as simple as underwear can be quite pricey, especially for an incoming college student like myself. $10 for 3 pairs? $15 for 5 pairs? Ugh, it doesn’t sound like a lot, but I have to buy enough to last till laundry day, and possibly other unseen circumstances. Money is already tight as is, being out-of-state and my parents not being able to help support me too much.

But thanks again for the words of advice, everyone. If anyone else has anything to add, feel free to.

Hey, I consider 5 for $26 a deal a deal for the underwear I get. :))

But I totally get it. I suggest you buy in bulk and then as time goes add to your stash. It always hurts your pocket at first.

Took me one minute to find 7 for $17.98 no tax no shipping charge on Amazon. Wonder what you can find in 5 minutes.

Well, I wouldn’t buy in bulk until you try them and see how they work out.

Well, duh! :stuck_out_tongue:
