B in Orchestra

Do you guys think colleges (esp. ivies) look at individual grades/the difficulty or just look at the overall GPA because I received a B (84) in orchestra for forgetting to turn in the one assignment we did in the class.

Also, is an 89 in a class and an 80 the same thing?

Thanks in advance!

all colleges look at the difficulty of your courseload. they also dont care how you got the B - if u think it was unfair or unjustified, they think thats an issue for you and the teacher to discuss. and 89 compared to 80 depends on how your school calculates your gpa, average, or class rank. at my school, for example, 80 and 89 are essentially the same in gpa calculation, but the numeric grade itself is listed on the transcript. many colleges, if they have numeric grades available to them, will recalculate your gpa on their own scale. hope this helps.

It depends on the rest of your courseload and ass Neviar said they couldn't care less as to why to got a certain grade, and at my school an 89 isn't the same thing as an 80. Though they will likely recalculate your gpa to their own scale.

but my point is not that I got a 84, but will colleges care about a B in orchestra?

NO. That is, if it's A, A, A, B, A, A (all of these in orchestra), then maybe they'll look. If it's B, B, B, B, B, probably not (especially if you do well elsewhere).

NewEng, what do you mean by "NO. That is, if it's A, A, A, B, A, A (all of these in orchestra), then maybe they'll look."

That is exactly what I have, all A's in orch. except one.

bump 10 char

they're going to care about all your grades no matter what. music classes are known to be easy grades, so they're going to wonder why all A's and a B in orchestra, of all classes. but really dont sweat it. if the rest of your application is strong, it really shouldnt matter that much
