B.U. or University of Maryland?

What do people think about the overall reputation of BU versus U of Maryland College Park?

I applied to both these and I would pick BU unless Maryland is a lot cheaper. BU has a slightly better reputation even though UMD is higher ranked, but you can't go wrong with either. UMD does have a real campus, though.

I'd pick UMD, because it's probably about the same in quality and almost certainly cheaper to go to. I think in this era, people look a little smarter in picking public universities than they do picking private ones at the same level. Besides, BU has no real campus.

Hi :) Both schools are great. I've seen both and I personally liked UMaryland better. I didn't even end up applying to BU. It all depends on what type of college experience you want to have. If sports don't matter to you and you want a city school with no real campus, then go with BU. If you want a cheaper school with sports and a big campus, then UMaryland is the place for you.

I live in NJ which is in between UMaryland & BU for all intents & purposes, and they have basically an equal reputation here. They're also very similarly ranked. I'd go with the University of Maryland, but that's a personal preference.

-edit-

Actually I think BU might have Division 1 basketball...? I'm not sure. UMaryland has football & basketball, though. Yay, Terps!

BU's major sport is without a doubt hockey. The Terriers are currently the number 1 seed in the Division I NCAA tournament. The arena is very impressive, and games are very well attended by both students and Bostonians. Although it's not popular outside of the Northeast, Canada, and parts of the Midwest, hockey is HUGE in Boston.

not to mention that terrier hockey is also number 1 in the NATION! playing ohio state tonight at 5:30 in the northeast regional for anyone interested!

btw, bu DOES have a campus, it's just not a traditional campus with the buildings surrounding a quad and some greenery in the middle where everyone sits between classes. you can find that at harvard. but bu isn't just like a building here, some office buildings and houses, another building down there, etc. bu owns the ENTIRE street of commonwealth ave and the entire street from kenmore square to almost packard's corner is bu. it's impossible for bu to have a "traditional" campus because we have 18,000 undergrads and 12,000 grads.

Reputations of BU and UMD seem pretty similar, I also have to choose between these two. I live in MD, so that means in-state tuition, but BU's giving me $45K in grants, which is amazing except for the fact that it's not a renewable scholarship, aka 45K is good only for my first year. But I love Boston...

Anyone have any advice? Would it be worth for me to go to BU, try my best to maintain a good gpa, and hopefully receive about the same amount of money for my second year? It's a risk, but I'm going to talk to one of their fin aid officers about this.

Thanks for the great responses. I got really nice fin aid from BU which makes going there less than UMD. Didn't receive UMD's aid letter yet though. It's going to be a tough decision. Doing an overnight at UMD next week which should make it easier to decide. The other caveat is that I applied to CAS but got into CGS at BU. I was kinda bummed but I keep hearing great things about CGS.

Wow. I have to make this decision also.
Right now I'm leaning a little towards Maryland but only because it's a little cheaper and because Maryland has a big campus but Boston is so charming in its own way....

Oh, wow. THIS IS HARD!

welll. :/
i got into both and honors for umd
but i live in md &i am in love with boston, so i'll probably end up at boston
if you go to md, however, you might get a more tight-knit experience. the campus is nice and very closed off.
look at which school matches your major the most.
i personally love boston and want to get out of md but i am sure you'll make the right choice for yourself
:] good luck and congrats
