How much do colleges look at specific grades? I have finals coming up and I have a 90.1% in a class and I’m very worried for the final. I’m worried about getting a b in the class. I have never gotten a b before, and I have As in all of my other classes, which includes an AP so my weighted GPA would be a 4.0 still. Thanks for any feedback!
You should be ok. Stop worrying.
I’ve had my share. they don’t bite. Worrying will make it worse. Most students would love the prospect of a B to be their biggest worry! The B may suggest that you struggled a little at times with that material compared to material in other topics. It will suggest you don’t have an army of tutors to rescue you every time you have a slight challenge. That is a good thing! And it will tell colleges you can get a B and not freak out, become depressed or worse.
You think one B somehow makes you academically inferior? Don’t be that kid. You know the one – the guy on that Disney teen show who freaks out when he gets a 95% on the test that he thought he’d get 99% or 100%. By the end of the 30-min show, he redeems himself and sees how ridiculous he is. You can too.
A secret, gleaned from time talking with colleagues in admissions:
Frankly, a pure, unadulterated 4.0 can be something of a turnoff. It suggests the student is too uptight about grades to actually develop real interests outside of filling in the test bubbles their parents tell them to.
You know what excites me when I’m looking at an application? A “C.” On one occasion, a “D.” Look, all your other As have already convinced us you’re capable of doing the work. So is every other applicant. Your job is to now convince me that you have something ticking around up there other than your parents’ ambitions. I want to hear that you got so distracted by your love of music that you skipped a midterm study party for a change for the chance to fill in with a local band (actual applicant story). Tell me that you got a ‘C’ in physics because you got totally perfectionistic about your poetry reading. Tell me you devoted so much time to the perfect science fair project, because you fell in love with solving the three-body problem for orbital mechanics, that you barely pulled out a 3.3 that term.
Grades != intellect. Or passion.
