BA - Geography, Minor - Geology

Quick question. Will a B.A. in Geography with emphasis on Physical Geography and a minor in Geology be a great fit? I really enjoy the physical aspect of geography and was wondering if having a geology minor (I love geology too) would be a good idea. If I decide to go to a Masters program in either Geography or Geology after I get my undergraduate will I be able to with this option?

Graduate work in geology would benefit from a solid core foundation as an undergraduate. Courses in these areas, with possible variations depending on your interests, would be recommended:

Hydrology
Mineralogy
Petrology
Sedimentology
Structural geology
Paleontology
Field techniques
GIS

With this level of preparation, an actual major in the field may not be necessary for graduate pursuits. However, with these courses you would be close to fulfilling the requirements for a major in any event.

Potentially, yes. As long as you have the prerequisites in each area you should be fine for going to graduate school, and many colleges set up their geography major this way - you can either concentrate in the physical sciences aspects of it or the social sciences aspects, with classwork in the other side as well.

Sounds like a great idea. Another minor you may be interested in is GIS, Geographic Information Systems (very much in-demand :p)

I took an upper division physical geography course and found that my geology courses, particularly structural geology and sedimentary petrology, gave me an edge over most of the other students.
