Ba in finance trying to pursue masters in petroleum

So I received my BA in Finance from UT Austin McCombs in 2011. I have been working for a small private oil and gas company in Houston since I was in high school, started out doing clerical work and eventually moved over to the finance side and now am doing Operational/Production Engineering work.

Even though I am able to do production/operation work at my current company I would like a back-up plan in-case I decide to change companies. The Production side has been really interesting to me and I enjoy it a lot and have been trying to a school where I can earn my Masters in Petroleum Engineering with a Business Undergrad degree. Currently I am on a drilling rig as our company man, and do all our drilling reports, keep up with AFE costs, coordinate service companies, etc. I also manage and run a field that makes 150 BOPD. From line repairs, to equipment issues, etc. I've worked on frac jobs, smaller completion/workover jobs, perforating jobs, and gained experience in log correlating.

I'm also looking at maybe just going back to night school and earning a BS in Petroleum Engineering to fulfill my undergraduate degree requirements.

Can anyone help me out with some info here? Or know of anybody that has done this in the past and where they went? I also would like to continue working while going to school (although, I realize this would be highly unlikely). Any advice is greatly appreciated.

First place to start would be to look at MS programs you would be interested in. Look at the prerequisites to see where you would need to go back and take the undergrad classes. Also see if they will accept a BA in finance as your undergrad.

I would guess that there will be quite a few classes that would be necessary. However, going back for a full BS program might require more than you need. You should concentrate on getting the knowledge you need and not the “well rounded” program as you already have a BA degree.

Hard but not impossible. Maybe with 6-9 undergrad engineering courses you could shore things up enough to go onto grad school. GL

Education is power and a key to success. With that out of the way why do you want to pursue a MS in PTRT. It is typically not needed for any job I have come across in O&G. Also even with a masters the vet will get the job over you. In O&g time in the industry always beats the degree which sucks. What do you actaul want to do with your Ptrt degree? As a company man you should be keeping your hands clean and make 90k a year.

I graduated from TCU in 08 with a degree in finance and have since gone back to school to pursue a bs in PE at OU. I looked at trying to do the masters in PE, but it is not possible without going and getting a bunch of calculus, physics, and chemistry. If you are wanting to do PE I recommend you go the post baccalaureate route as the entry level PE job market is much more favorable to undergrads. Depending on which school you pick you should be able to complete the degree in 3 years because you will have all the other classes already completed from your finance degree.
