BA or BFA for adults over 30 years old

Any advice for 31 year old transfer student with AA in Drama-2006. I have minimal film credits and training and no theatre background or productions. I’m looking to go back to school to earn a BA in Theatre or BFA in Acting considering my circumstances. I’ve always to get this degree but I was wondering if it’s realistic to pursue it. I currently live in South Florida and is looking for colleges in the Midwest (Chicago/Ohio) or New York. Any information would be helpful and greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It shouldn’t be a problem – places like Juilliard tend to favor older students with more experience under their belts, and there are some older students in my D’s BFA program at CalArts. You might also consider a straight acting school in NYC or Chicago so that you can audition and attend classes at the same time. This would allow you to see if this is truly something you want without committing to a full on BFA program. You say you have minimal film/theatre background – you might also consider finishing your BA at a school with a strong theatre component and then getting an MFA at a conservatory. There are lots of really great acting schools in NYC – Adler, Playwrights, Barrow, Acting Studio, Esper, Neighborhood playhouse…

There’s a guy in my son’s program (CCPA Roosevelt, Acting) who is 28 or 29 and got a BA in broadcast journalism prior to being enrolled. He’s doing very well there, lots of prime roles.

CCM Drama is very into taking older students. Let me know if you want me to put you into contact with any of the older students so you can get an idea of what the classes and training are like for them.

Thanks for the comment. The BA in Theatre Arts is what I’m leaning towards more considering the lack of theatre experience I have for any any top BFA program like Juilliard or CalArts. Education was always important to me. Acting schools and 2 year conservatory programs I am familiar with in NYC which will always be an option. I’ll be looking more into some of the small, liberal arts colleges that offer BA in Theatre, big name or not which is not much of a concern.

Look at Skidmore, Sarah Lawrence, Vassar – I’m sure others will have more suggestions. I believe the New School has a BA Theatre Arts as well.
