BA or BFA?

Which one is better to get in theatre?

There is no general answer to that question. Some BFAs and BAs look very similar in terms of curriculum, some look very different. Look at program courses, performance and professional networking opportunities, location, etc… to create your list of schools. You may find yourself drawn to more BFA programs or BA programs. Ultimately, the degree “letters” do not matter as much as finding the program that offers the educational and training experience that you want.

It also depends on what you want to do with the degree…

Look closely at each school and what they have to offer. My daughter started out wanting a BFA only and was admitted to two BFA’s and several BA’s. She is an actor and plans to make her living as a performer and has chosen to go the BA route. It fits her needs and desires. No one is better than another. It’s what fits you best.

My D has been drawn to BFA programs more than BA programs simply because she wants to be less focused on general ed requirements and more focused on performing. However, there are some BFA programs on her list that do have some decent general ed requirements, so that isn’t always a guarantee. She’s found a handful of BA programs that she likes and would be satisfied with, but will probably ultimately choose a BFA program as long as one to her liking makes her an offer, also.

I would definitely encourage one to keep all options open. A lot can change in the next 8 months. Check out the final decision Background threads on both the MT and Theatre/Drama forums. The posters explain the thinking process that led to their child’s final decision. Ultimately it is the child’s decision (once the financials have panned out), and they have had time to grow and mature through the application/audition experience.

Some BA programs (like Fordham) are very performance-heavy. I’d focus on the individual program, not the degree itself.
