Backing out of early decision

Hi,
I was just accepted into Gettysburg where I applied ED2. However, due to lack of interest in the last couple of visits, I would rather go UCLA. Both decisions came on the same day so it's not like I could have retracted all applications when I got accepted by my ED school. So, my question is...

Is there anyway to back out of my ED school? Sure they can't make me go there but is there a fee or what steps should I take?

Thanks in advance.

Calling this a ■■■■■ because I don’t believe UCLA (or any UC) has released any decisions yet…

It’s not a ■■■■■.

I can scan my letter if needed. Please help me with my situation someone…

But how can you not goto your ED college? And how come ED2 decisions are out so fast? Aren’t they supposed to be out only after Feb 15th?

Anyway, back to the OP’s original question the only way you can back out of ED is if you cannot afford that school financially. That is the only way if you go to UCLA then Gettysburg can just call UCLA and tell them you backed out of a ED CONTRACT and UCLA can revoke your admission.

I would hope they wouldn’t be so spiteful. Wouldn’t even mind paying a fee…

Has anyone else had this problem before?

more thoughts please

Why’d you even ED in the first place…?

UCLA has not sent out acceptances. This is an odd post.

Thats why they tell you to ED only if you know 100% if you are accepted that you will accept the offer of admission. So you HAVE to attend now.

If you back out of an ED school, you get blacklisted, which will probably prevent you from getting in anywhere else. And although you already got into UCLA, keep in mind that schools can retract acceptances if something happens.

A similar situation happened to my friend back in high school. She applied ED to more than one school. No school can FORCE you to attend. The only thing that they can do, IF they know where you’d be going, is “talk” to that other school and tell on you essentially. Other than that there is NO action that they can take against you. They can’t make you attend under any circumstance. I hope this helps.

If you applied for financial aid, you can tell them you don’t like their package and want to withdraw from the contract, but I doubt it will work out. They might just try to give you a more generous financial aid package.

say your parents got laid off and you need a full ride

He would need to provide proof of that, and if that happened his parents would be collecting unemployment money, and they can easily look it up. If they find out you are lying to them they and trying to lie yourself out of a ED contract they will blacklist you.

I can scan my letter if needed.

I would really appreciate it if you would scan your UCLA letter of acceptance and post it, removing your name and address but leaving the date on it.

Tell them that you don’t want to continue your education, you have come to a self realization that you want to travel to different parts of the world on a bicycle and spread the message about the harms done by global warming.

Danny, have a look at

Let this be a lesson for anyone interested in ED…

^agreed. The OP’s low post count only increases my ■■■■■ speculation. Plus I thought UCLA released decisions online?
@OP, why would you ED without visiting before? without being 100% sure? If in fact UCLA did admit you already than maybe Gettysburg can be lenient (probably not). Maybe you can reason with the college that your parents won’t pay $40,000 but will pay for $20,000 for UCLA.
