Hi CC, i’m an international student who was accepted ED2 to a college, and I did not apply for financial aid. But due to some recent personal financial changes and economic changes at home, I can no longer predict that I’ll be able to pay the bill all four years. I did withdraw all my RD applications after getting in, so I’m not trying to play games with my ED college. Right now I’m still working something out, but if given compelling financial reasons that would prevent me from affording college in the USA, would it be okay to ask to be let out of my ED agreement to explore far cheaper options closer to home? Thanks!
Yes, you can back out for a financial reason, but you should contact that school directly.
Chances are they won’t let you out of the agreement. They should let you withdraw the app, but you will no longer have an acceptance to the school.
You can also try to negotiate financial aid, depending on the school.
Yes, you can back out for financial reasons.
They can absolutely not compel you to attend. Do whatever is best for you.
Thanks all!
You’re only supposed to prove you have money for the first year.
Email the college and say you’re committed to them, but unforeseen circumstances make it possible you might not have enough money to pay for all four years - you can pay for the first year, but after that it’ll depend on the economic turn/how investments go for your family/how you weather the economic issue that’s severely impacted family finances these past few days. Is it better for you to withdraw now, or to come for your first year keeping in mind you may have to apply for financial aid in order to stay (and is it even possible for you to apply for financial aid for Year 2 - and that it may not be necessary for Years 3 and 4 as your family may recover from the financial hit that befell them unexpectedly). You’ll need to have proof it was unexpected and not a ploy on your part. You can also ask if you can defer entry for one year until the financial problems have been settled, so you’d start Fall 2016 instead of Fall 2015.
You can still withdraw (even if they suggest you come and apply for FA for Year2) but this way you’ll have all elements in hand to make your decision.
