Backpacks

Hey all,

I was wondering where you guys usually get your backpacks? I’m guaranteed to have a heavy load of things on my back all the time and I really need any brands where the straps won’t split and the back support is good (as well as the design).

I’ve checked over the Jansport bags and they seem pretty good but I heard they didn’t have the best back support. I’ve also heard that some prep school students use large tote bags?

Any recommendations and suggestions would be great!
And I’m sorry for yet another "where shall I buy (insert item of clothing etc. here) thread that’s pretty much cluttering up CC

I’ve had my LL Bean backpack for six years and it’s still in near-perfect condition. (I may get a new backpack that’s slightly larger for the fall, though; I’ll probably get another LL Bean one.)

@Ravenclaw3 Is it good for back support? But wow, that’s a lot of years!
Where are you going for school?

Pretty good back support; Exeter. Where are you going?

@Ravenclaw3 Oh congrats! Are there a variety of styles for the bags? I heard L.L Bean is pretty good for boots too.

There’s some variety in backpacks. Here’s a link:

I don’t happen to have bean boots, but I know many people who have and like them.
Where are you going next fall?

@Ravenclaw3 Thank you for the link! I’m deciding between Lawrenceville and Milton

Congrats! Two great schools!

@Ravenclaw3 Aw thank you! Exeter is an excellent school as well, you’re very talented (I see the sorting hat has chosen the right house for you)

It was funny - I ended up having about five separate Harry Potter conversations at my revisit and of the people I spoke to about HP about 85% were Ravenclaws and of the remaining 15%, most were Slytherins. Not to promote stereotypes about Exeter, but I can’t say I was terribly surprised.

@Ravenclaw3 Ambition and wit seems to go hand in hand don’t they?
We really are very off topic now! How did we get from backpacks with good back support to the percentage of Slytherins and Ravenclaws in Exeter?

My daughter has the largest ll bean. I think it’s called turbo transit or something along those lines.

@MAandMEmom I’ve never thought of LL bean as a backpack provider. You guys are providing a lot of insight! Thank you, I’ll go and check it out

We picked up one on sale at EMS for our son when he was in middle school and it is still holding up well now that he is a freshman in college.

Not a brand recommendation, but when you get a backpack, try to get one that has some sort of identifying characteristic. It will help down the road when you have to quickly grab it from a pile, can help avoid someone mistakingly grabbing it, and can help when you have to send out a campus wide email because you can’t find your back pack. The same goes for lanyards.

LL. Bean backpacks are great quality, but I recommend a thinner material. It’s easier to squish into places, lighter (more comfortable), and is somewhat distinguishable (Since so few people have them). And at my Choate revisit day, there were a surprising amount of Hufflepuffs. Hotchkiss was mostly all Ravenclaws, with a few Slytherins and Gryffindors, but no Hufflepuffs. Funny right? It’s probably the friend group my host was in.

@Temperantia Wow! L.L Bean bags are tough!

@carpoolingma Hmm…yeah. That’s why I was thinking of getting a Jansport bag with all of its different patterns and things. Do you know what brand you (or your child, I’m sorry if you’re a student ahhh it’s so hard to determine age here) used?
Also, lanyards? For what?

@FunintheSun1211 That’s a really good point. Will keep digging for the perfect bag!
That’s so interesting though, I think Hogwarts Houses in preps schools are pretty interesting to look at too. However, it does depend on the people you’re around so there’s that

We should start a thread for different BS Hogwarts house ratios . . .
Would have applied to Hogwarts, but my parents wouldn’t let me apply to a school where I couldn’t be a day student

@Ravenclaw3 They should totally do a poll at each school for that and publish the results online.
Would have applied to Hogwarts except that my owl ate my letter and flew off with the scraps
