Hi. I know someone who wants to transfer to a decent four-year university to study materials science and engineering or chemical engineering as an undergrad. However, he is having trouble coming up with safety schools with a fairly decent program in one or both of these majors in California. Do you have any suggestions as to which reach, match, and safety schools (with those criteria) he should apply to?

He goes to a community college and is doing fairly well.

UCs that offer it (most have chemE, fewer materials science), maybe a cal state or two, especially look into the cal polys, Stanford, Caltech, Harvey Mudd maybe.

Can't help you unless you tell us a few details like GPA, SAT/ACT, SAT II, etc... I know, not very important details, but they tend to determine what qualifies as a reach, match and safety! Hehe! At any rate, the usual suspects like UCSB and UCSD and UCLA and USC and of course, Stanford, Cal and Caltech are all good.
