i'm a junior, and for 8 months now, I've been working in a science lab in a local university, on a topic i really like and a professor i absolutely adore. problem is, since i'm a hs student, i've been assigned a grad student mentor who i think may be...well...crazy. Call me paranoid, but my suspicions are possibly correct. everyone else in the lab (other postdocs, etc.) absolutely hates her because she belittles them, and so far, she's fired 5 undergrads who worked for her (two apparently quit). i thought she was okay, but recently, she has proceeded to insult me, undermining my research abilities infront of other lab members, calling me incompetent, etc. plus, she has started to observe EVERYTHING i do, making me so nervous, i've started to mess up the simplest things. i've worked at other labs before, but have never before been treated like this. i'm working on a research project at the lab, but at the same time, i can't stand the mental torture. should i leave the lab and look for a new mentor, or stay and endure? the last person who complained against her was ...fired.

Can you talk to someone under an oath of confidentiality and see if they can transfer you to a new mentor?

problem is, i started a new project in the lab, and can only do it under somebody's supervision. that's her. i know, i'm screwed.

God, she sounds like such a *****. Find the guy she has to sleep with to keep her job and tell him to cut the crap.
Or find someone who's higher up than her and let him/her know that she's way out of line.
Or find a way to ignore her, or deal with her in a way that tells her she can't walk all over you.
Or ask if you can have a different supervisor for your project.
Wow, this advice is kind of lame.. sorry dash.
You could always try shanking too.

Some people are worth flipping off and walking out on.

but before you do that complain to your professor or something. And if you're on the verge of being "fired", then quit with dignity, flip her off and walk out.

if i leave, i will flip her off...at least walk out with dignity. seriously, i don't think winning intel sts is worth what i've to go thru. worst of all, it's even starting to harm my other ec's...since i feel kinda "low."
sucks having bad mentors. aren't they supposed to help you?
